Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldier - sesdelta38 - 03-29-2012

Hi all. I joined this forum a few years ago, and now my interest in the roman military has gone to new heights.

Recently, I've been looking into the book by Graham Sumner, Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldier

Does anyone here have this book? If so, is it a good read? How many illustrations are in this book?

It has a lot of good pictures and a lot of methodically very questionable hypotheses presented as facts in it. There are some reviews here on the forum, best use the search function.

It's a good read. It gives a controversial look on several themes, what makes you think. It's more a D'Amato book, and Sumner's pictures are great.

Hello

As I am unsure how to post links to past threads I did find the following from a year ago:

Just in case you missed it, Jasper has posted the following link
feedproxy.google.com/~r/ancientwarfare/~3/8wb9PkhylNY/282-review-of-damato-and-sumner-arms-and-armour.html
a very interesting review of Arms and Armour in the Bryn Mawr Classical Review.

This is the best review I have seen on the book. The collection of photographs of equipment and sculpture etc.. is outstanding and probably the most you will ever get in any book on the Roman Army.

The artworks for the second volume were completed last Summer.

Graham.

Here´s the link. I don´t agree with the reviewer´s section on parade armor, but the rest hits the nail on the head.

How many of your own illustrations are in this book Graham?

I completed 11 paintings for the second volume last summer. Some paintings for the Third volume were finished in 2007.

Graham.

Speaking of the original paintings for books like yours or Peter Connolly, et al., what becomes of them?

Re: Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldier - Graham Sumner - 07-09-2012

In my case Richard many of the originals have been kept together and travel around in an exhibition.

There are details on my website gsillustrator.co.uk

Graham.
