Obviously not in Sparta, but did the poor/lower class of most Greek city states serve as Peltasts or was this a mercenary role. The rich were the Calvary, the middle class were the hoplites, so what about the poor? Thanks. <p></p><i></i>

Classical Greek peltasts were mostly, but not exclusively, mercenaries.<br>

The lower classes would either fight as light infantry much less well equipped and trained than peltasts, or row in the fleet, or not fight at all. <p></p><i></i>
