Quiz - D B Campbell - 10-08-2012

Quote:The flag is not Croatian
It looked Croatian!

So now we are looking for a fort in Bulgaria with a railway running through it? Second wild guess: ...

Edit: Actually, having seen the size of the principia (?) I'd rather guess Durostorum (Silistra)!

Quiz - M. CVRIVS ALEXANDER - 10-08-2012

Hot!

But not it. Try further south-west.

South-west?! It can't be Novae again?!

Quiz - M. CVRIVS ALEXANDER - 10-08-2012

No, it is south-south-west from Novae

Quiz - Vindex - 10-09-2012

I think you've gone too far SSW, Moi. It seems to be Sostra (Lomets), which has only relatively recently been excavated. Would that be correct, Alexander?

That is correct! It is the principia in Sostra, and Duncan has the next turn.

Moi, here is the board you tried to zoom into Smile

The good thing about this thread is that it I learn something new.

The bad thing about it is that the list of places I want to visit is growing longer and longer! Novae is certainly on the list and this looks a fabulous place too - thank you Alexander!

PS. Thank you for the notice board picture...now where's the dictionary ;-)

Apart from explaining what the principia was for, the board says that it was built by cohors II Mattiacorum in the middle of the 2nd century and destroyed in the end of the 4th following the defeat of Emperor Valens at Adrianople. Here is the legend in English:

Quiz - Caballo - 10-09-2012

That looks remarkably like the Atlas mountains in Morocco- but I don't know of a similar limes site. Am I in the right N. African ball park?

Wrong continent, I'm afraid.

It's either in Anatolia or Syria, I think anatolia because of the mountains, but there is that one fort in Syria that I remember something about the Persians with, trying to think of the name.

Quiz - Jona Lendering - 10-16-2012

Any clues?

Apologies -- I have been away.

Clues? Hmmm, it's not in Anatolia or Syria. It's much further south.
