Quiz - Ildar - 11-16-2012

Quote:If this is a hint

Yes, this is a hint.

Quote:I'm going for Panticapaeum - Kerch

You missed by about 10km. There were several ancient Greek towns and settlements within the modern Kerch beside metropolitan Panticapaeum.

Quiz - Ildar - 11-24-2012

Ok, what other hint can I offer? Perhaps, this will help.
Point A - the top of the Mitridat Hill, where the Panticapaeum Acropolis stood.

Even though Duncan asked me "to fox us with a Russian example", I will not do it anymore - it seems to be too difficult.

Indeed, even now, much Russian archaeology remains obscure to us westerners! Our handbooks list only Panticapaeum, and no hint of any other townships in the vicinity. Cry

Quiz - Ildar - 11-25-2012

Then one more hint - there were 5 Greek settlements in the area of the modern Kerch: http://goo.gl/maps/WEjOh

A) Porthmion
B) Myrmekion
C) Pantikapaion
D) ???
E) Nymphaion

Quote:Indeed, even now, much Russian archaeology remains obscure to us westerners!

You have to learn Russian! There is a sea of literature!

Quote:Our handbooks list only Panticapaeum, and no hint of any other townships in the vicinity.  Cry

But what about the "Geography" of Ptolemy or "Periplous" of Pseudo-Arrian?

Quiz - Nathan Ross - 11-25-2012

Tyritake?

Quiz - Ildar - 11-25-2012

Quote:Tyritake?

Hooraaaay!!! It is indeed the recently excavated north-east defensive wall of Tyritake.

Over to you, Nathan!

I can't take much credit - that was as close to a giveaway as we've yet had! :-)

However... Where would you find this mysterious person?:

Quiz - D B Campbell - 11-25-2012

Quote:However... Where would you find this mysterious person?
Okay, I'll get rid of the obviously-wrong answer right away: Pompeii? ;-)

That was the obviously-wrong answer, yes! :cheer:

Museo Nazionale Romano di Palazzo Massimo alle Terme. Fresco from cubiculum of the Villa Farnesina.

Yes! Ildar gets it again! Smile

Quiz - Ildar - 11-25-2012

Ok, something easier. What and where?

Quiz - D B Campbell - 11-25-2012

Quote:Fresco from cubiculum of the Villa Farnesina.
Thanks -- I have never seen this fresco before. What -- dare one ask -- is the young lady supposed to be doing?!

Quiz - Nathan Ross - 11-25-2012

Quote:What -- dare one ask -- is the young lady supposed to be doing?!

I really don't know! And I don't recall the museum display giving any hints either.

She appears to be wearing at least the bottom half of one of those Roman 'bikinis', as found in London and shown on the Piazza Armerina mosaics. Perhaps she's holding a spare pair in her hands?

At a guess, she might be a pearl diver - the sack across her shoulder to hold the oysters. But it's all very obscure...

Quiz - Gaius Julius Caesar - 11-25-2012

Perhaps she is almost finished the dance of a thousand veils?
