Evan, why do you think that the musculata looks late Roman as opposed to others? I'm not disagreeing (I know very little of late Rome in general), but curious as to why you think there is a distinction in form from, say, high Empire to late Empire.

As far as I remember, most of the depictions I've seen from, say, the paintings from Dura Europos that depict officers in musculata (image attached) seem to be depicting the traditional, anatomical (as opposed to short) cuirass. The only difference that I can see is the sash wrapped around the waist to signify officer status (I forget the word atm...zonum? zona? something along the lines) is much wider than say, those depicted on earlier statues/paintings. I've read that many interpret this wide sash as being imbedded as part of the cuirass itself (such as D'Amato, I believe), and have taken that along with some other random details depicted to mean that the cuirass saw widespread use throughout the later Roman period, and of course, was undoubtedly a leather garment ( Big Grin ).

Don't bring up leather armor. I have fought that argument continuously for 3 years on another forum :dizzy:

I think it looks more Late Roman because of the simplistic style of it.

But didn't you know that the Romans used tanks and siege towers made from leather?!? You can clearly see that they are "bending" when they were depicted! LOL!

I can see what you mean regarding the more simplistic depiction common to the later era. I wonder when the fashion of depicting Emperors, full-scale and clad in cuirass went out of fashion. I don't seem to recall any beyond Marcus Aurelius....not to derail the topic too much. Apologies, gentleman.

And smashing kit Virilis! As I've stated previously, I'm not much of a fan at heart of late antiquity and its toll on Rome, but you're impressions are always fantastic.

Thanks Alexander, too kind! I remember when I first saw pictures of the late roman period, they looked simply weird. Little by little they started to fascinate me and I think it was the high standards of Fectio that eventually hooked me. Big Grin
