More pics of the event here.

Sorry I could not hear anyone with the helmet on in the wind

Me an my dear friend Fronto

Just about to execute a butternut which considering its not sharp, the veg was just sat on top and it cleaved it in too with no problem to my surprise   Huh

Me warming up the ballista for fireing, worked a dream even though it sat in the rain all the day before.
All in all a very good weekend and as ever in kit all the time even when it was about 4 degrees one night.

You've probably explained the presence of the hand before but what is the story behind it?

Good old Fronto....how is Steve?....not seen him for nearly 12 months.

That is good to hear Tony. It is far too long since I saw him too (just over a year now), and actually, it's been a year or two since I last bumped into you as well.

So what do you tell them when they do ask?

RE: Recently at Arbeia... - brennivs - tony drake - 04-21-2017

Sorry Michael just tried to keep it brief. Basically I open with how the falx could slice of body parts and my roll as once actually fighting against the Romans and how I came to be serving in the army. This then leads onto the use of heads especially  by the cavalry hanging from there horses to intimidate the enemy, as well the incident involving the LEG II AUG in 22AD when the legionaries stopped fighting and pursuing the running enemy because they were recruited from a head hunting tribe, began removing heads as trophys while the officer urged them to finish the fleeing enemy. From this I find a great number of questions start to be asked. This worked great when I decapitated the butternut, after I stated that the falx was not sharp and had little hope of it cutting half way through to be proved wrong  Blush then I said to the crowd  This is how lethal even a blunt sword can be. I hope this goes to explain the hand  Smile

Thanks for that. So, are you ex-Coh I Aelia Dacorum (http://www.enciclopedia-dacica.ro/imagini-site/lapidarium/camboglanna.jpg) and is the hand Roman or, e.g., Caledonian?

RE: Recently at Arbeia... - brennivs - tony drake - 04-22-2017

No Michael I am now the first Centurian of COH I Dacorivm, and the hand is any enemy of the Roman state  Wink the stone in your link is one of a few I used as a template to make my Falx from. From all the swords we have this one that the public are most fascinated with and the feel of it in the hand. Now I have to dress in full Roman dress, I have had to make a few new pieces of kit, I still need to make a new helmet hopefully this year.
