Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 07-29-2002

Have you heard of Corvus' brother organization, Legio IX Hispana in San Diego? It's the more historical version of the "beat 'em with sticks" group.

I fight with the Orkney Warband. We are basically Greco-Roman. Corvus is Celtic-Roman and 9th Legion in the SCA warband branch of the reenacting group Legio IX Hispana.
Ave Jenny, Quintus, and Aulus (Rich Campbell)!

I finally was successful in re-registering with your website and want to thank all of you for your help. Now that I am registered under a new name I guess that makes me RomanBuckeye, the re-enactor formerly know as Gnaeus Laetonius Messala. Like Rich Campbell, Jeff Crean, and Matt Amt, I'm a member of Legio XX in Maryland. I chose the latest moniker to represent two of my favorite hobbies, Roman legionary re-enacting and being an Ohio State University Buckeyes football/men's basketball fan.
Hi Messala,
Welcome (back) to the board! I hope you don't have to go through the registering process every time you want to post something!
Greets
Mea Culpa! - RomanBuckeye - 08-03-2002

Thanks Jasper for the greetings! I hope the weather is pleasant in The Netherlands today, because in Maryland, U.S.A. it's going to be in the 90's (degrees Fahrenheit) today.
Rich Campbell deleted my old user name and I was able to take a unique enough name to make a post.
I have to correct two errors in my choice of Latin words in my last post. Substitute "Ave" with "Avete" and "Vale" with "Valete" since I was addressing more than one person in the post. There, I've redeemed myself.
Re: Mea Culpa! - Praefectusclassis - 08-03-2002

The weather is more pleasant these last days, thanks for asking. Monday when I drove to Kalkriese to meet the tourgroup, it was some 30C, not very pleasant in a black car that has stood in plain sunshine, because the parking was full.
Greets
Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 08-12-2002

Greetings, I thought I'd come and check out this board.

I am from Canada
I became interested in Rome... hmmm... quite a while ago. I'm planning on studying Classical Archaeology in University over the next few years. This is partly inspired by my interest in Rome.
Why am I here? because somebody mentioned this board somewhere else and I was curious.
and to answer the last question, as mentioned above I am a student.
Meusa Deo; meusa amora, meusa vitae.

Archaeology students and opportunities - richsc - 08-12-2002

Welcome Miss Mari; as you may note on one thread, dig opportunities are mentioned here from time to time. I don't think there is any one place that attempts to mention them all. Do you have a particular area of interest?
Richard Campbell, Legio XX.

Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 08-14-2002

I just stumbled on to this site yesterday when I saw and responded to Dan Petersons thread about a fighting system for re enactors. I agreed with holeheartedly with everything he said. Since then I have checked out a lot of threads and can't believe how good this site is. I'll definitely be here a lot. Not posting that often but LEARNING from all the knowledgeable contributors. I first feel in love with Rome thru the classic movie portal. Sparticus, Fall of Roman Empire, etc. Iwent to Western Michigan University and Majored in history ( specifically Rome and the Dark Ages).I fell in to the SCA in 1973 and won my first tournament two weeks later. I was knighted in 1975 and was involved intermittently until 1996 when my wife was "the Queen of the Middle Kingdom' and we both realized that the organization really is screwed up. *** I realize also that strong opinions exist about the SCA after reading many posts with comments both pro and con. I don't wish to insult anyone but I listed my peerage not to boast but to establish the fact that I saw a lot of development and the dissolution of common sense over the years. That said, I then got involved with Nova Roma thinking it the perfect vehicle to excercise my combat experience within the time frame that I really was interested in all along. I was the first govenor of the Great Lakes and a Curele Audile , and had great plans to develop festivals that included Gladiatorial combat loosely based on early SCA armour requirements and conventions. Before I could get started , however , I fell ill and needed a liver transplant from years of combating Crohn's Disease. I survived and have grown healthy again and have had plenty of time in my recooperation to polish up our plans. Thats one of my purpose here is to find any suggestions for cmbat and simulated weapons to try. We particullary need help in the Trident area as everything we've tried. If anyone has suggestions please forward them to me. Any and all will be greatly appreciated. I have also read some negative comments regarding Nova Roma and their reluctance to stay in touch with people after not agreeing to join. All I can say is thats regrettably , but I've found everyone to be pretty helpful. There is no organized combat program but I hope that changes in the near future. My Gens or family has planned to host a festival with gladiatorial combat to take place early next summer or late spring. Anyone interested in this event will be welcomed and all info regarding it will be forthcoming on the Gens Silvanius website that will be up by next week. The address is anzwers.org/trade/sil123/ . This will be held in the Toledo, area Ohio, and we already have received notices from various fighters scattered around the states that will attend. Again I will keep those interested updated. Remember any advice will be welcomed. And to the members here, keep posting and keep an old beat up fighter amused in his retirement!
