Salve Dave! Glad to see you un-lurk. Please do jump in. I am not sure if there are any reenactment groups in Oregon or Washington State.
Richard Campbell, Legio XX.

Thanks, Richard

I understand there is a small but active group up in Portland, OR and a very new group in Salem, OR. But I don't plan to get involved quite yet.
Interests - Anonymous - 09-22-2002

Hi:

I got interested from studying Roman History during my 5th Grade class. Further on from there I bought Caesar III, and my father got quite involved as well.

I am personally interested in the architecture, as I find, (to ppl. suprise), Rome's armies to be a little boring after a while, although the beginning of Roman Battle History is phenominal.

Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 09-25-2002

Hi all:
I live in San Mateo, California and work in San Francisco as a deputy attorney general.
I became interested in Rome as a kid - especially with its architecture. Later, in college I took classics and became interested in Roman military history reading the Commentaries. My interest has revived and I'm starting to get into ancient Roman wargaming, as well as the general study of its military history. Getting time to do much is a problem.
I have really enjoyed this forum and the great responses from members when I've posted. Hopefully, I'll be able to give something back as well.
Cheers,
New Recruits - Anonymous - 09-29-2002

Hi

I live in North Shields in northern England. I'm surrounded by Roman heritage. I've always been interested in Roman history since my grandfather took me to Hadrian's Wall when I was in primary school. As a child living in the countryside I often played next to a Roman road and hillfort. Seeing archeaologists excavating in the field next to my house influenced me to go into archeaology. Since then I have worked on Hadrian's Wall, Segedunum Roman Fort and most of interest at Arbeia Roman Fort.
It was at Arbeia in 1988 that I joined Cohors Quinta Gallorum, a newly started group based onthe regiment that was stationed there. Since then I have became a fanatical re-enacter. The group does the 3rd century which appealed to me as it was totaly different to others which I had seen. I have made over 7 shields using natural mterials, numerous hob nailed boots and 6 suits of scale armour, 4 of which are of the locked type. Presently I'm making another locked type of scale armour using scales 10 mm wide, 28mm long.
Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 09-30-2002

avete omnes

I've lurked awhile before joining -- this is wonderful group.

I live in West Sussex, England. Like many others, I got interested in Ancient Rome via Rosemary Sutcliff (my favourite of her novels is Mark of the Horse Lord), the film and book Spartacus and also, bizarrely, through high school Latin which was taught 35-40 years ago in a way that was almost guaranteed to put people off it for life! It's taught in much more user-friendly fashion now, as I discovered when I started to brush up with a 1990s course.

As a Friend of Vindolanda for over 30 years, I've followed closely the exciting excavations at the Roman auxiliary forts there, near Hadrian's Wall, and have been a volunteer excavator the last 2 summers. I'm amazed at the huge body of knowledge about the Roman auxiliary army that's being unearthed there. This summer I found myself in a rather soggy garbage pit which yielded to my trowel a leather bag, some fine matching Samian pottery pieces and a man's leather shoe. I was more thrilled with the shoe than the professional archaeologists were -- they already have 2000 of them in their museum storeroom! Now I know why they say archaeology is rubbish!

I'm here because my main interest is in the Roman military -- oddly for a woman, but there it is. There certainly is a wealth of knowledge and experience here! I'm particularly interested in the psychology of the Roman soldier.

I guess I'm really a frustrated re-enactor. I don't know if there are any female Roman army re-enactors, but I certainly don't have the height or build to be one, so this, alongside visits to re-enactment events, is the next best thing. The nearest I've come to re-enacting was doing an in-costume cookery demo for a late-Roman/Dark Ages group called Comitatus at the 2002 Kirby Hall History in Action event in Northamptonshire, England.

I'm delighted to be in the company of so many fellow-buffs, including some authors whose work I've long enjoyed and admired -- so far I've come across Daniel Petersen, M. C. Bishop, Simon Scarrow and John Maddox Roberts. If there are others, I hope to meet them soon.

With my other hat (or helmet) on, I'm editor of Solander, the magazine of the Historical Novel Society, and I try to feature as many authors of Roman fiction therein as I can without upsetting the balance. So far, I've interviewed Simon Scarrow, Steven Saylor and David Wishart.

I look forward to contributing to the Talk, as well as picking your brains.
Salve Masavo!

Please feel free to jump in anywhere. Long before the 'great tunic debate' there was the 'women as reenactors' debate. Although I can't find the thread at the moment, I assure you it was a lively topic which ended amicably. There are a good number of women reenactors, from gladiators to innkeepers to patricians, so you have some choice. Just to let you know, we here in the Legio XX in Washington DC have a civilian component as well:
Welcome Masavo!

Here is also a thread on the psychological impact of combat on Roman soldiers. Interesting to say the least.
Re: New Recruits - Anonymous - 10-06-2002

Salve comites!

Another recruit reporting and massively impressed by this wonderful site. And there's me thinking that nobody else is that interested in all things Roman!

I a bloke from NW England and I too grew up within spitting distance of several Roman sites so the Roman world has always been part of my world. In fact, I regularly used to play in a field near my childhood home that was the site of a Roman watchtower, although all that remains now are some bumps in the field. Unfortunately, a WWII observation post was built on the site so any Roman remains would have been destroyed then. Fantastic views though and it must have been a great vantage point for the nearby fort/cavalry stable at Ribchester.

I've always been interested in all things Roman and was lucky enough to have Classical Studies on the curriculum at my school. I've visited a number of sites in England, Italy and Croatia but I still can't seem to get enough. However, my long-suffering other half does not appreciate these things as much.

Got to say this is a fantastic site and I'll definitely to making many visits.
