New recruit - Flavius - 10-18-2002

Saluete omnes!
I'm Flavius, a ranker of XXX Legio Ulpia Victrix based in Rome. We had a lot of fun past october 4/5 at Albano, together with Dan Peterson's legion.

I hope to see you all commilitones next year in the same place. It would be great!
baking bread - richsc - 10-18-2002

I'm not sure how the troopers baked their bread. Legionary forts seemed to have something like a pizza oven of sorts; there is a thread about it inspired by a recent news article in a Scottish paper.
We were thinking of doing a bakery similar to what you might find in a vicus, so that would be a bit different than what the troops did.
Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 10-19-2002

Ave.I'm new to Roman Army talk, and thought I would start by Introducing myself. I go by the Roman name of Tuccius,to explain why let me start at the beginning. For reasons my parents can't explain(I think it was all of the biblical movies we watched) I started asking questions about Caesar and Rome from about age 5 or 6,which in turn during school would make my ears perk up when ever the subject matter came up.In the course of taking History,French, and Spanish,I came to admire the Ancient Roman world, unlike those Biblical movies I mentioned,I looked at Rome as the good guys not the bad one's.When I graduated high school(before the Internet)I had the chance to use the Mormons Genealogy records in Salt Lake city, where I was able to trace my family name back to England and 1066 when the Norman French brought a french spelling of the old Roman name Tuccius.I've been Roman at heart ever since. It's only recently, after spending some years in the military, that I have actively started to make my Roman fascination into a hobby, and started LEGIO II TRAIANA FORTIS in Las Vegas, but I'm so new at reenacting that I thought I should join a group like this and see how it's done.
Sorry I didn't mean to give everyone my life's story but I take Roman history seriously, and would welcome any advice or conversation about it.
Re: baking bread - richsc - 10-19-2002

Salve Tuccius! I seem to remember that there is another fellow in the Las Vegas area who was interested in forming a group. That is in one of the threads around here...
Richard Campbell, Legio XX.

Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 10-20-2002

G'day,

I know that I've posted a couple of times a long while back but seeing as I've stumbled across this thread, I thought I'd take the chance to introduce a bit of my interest in the Roman military, so without further ado:

- where are you from? Melbourne, Australia.

- how'd you become interested in Rome? Being a general history enthusiast, I've been interested in Rome for a few years now, specifically it's army as it represents the first large scale professional force.

- why are you here? I stumbled over this forum, doing a search for DBM of all things.

- do you re-enact, are you a student, an academic professional, or..? No, a student and a student of theology at that, so my interest in Rome is not only to do with it's army.

Well, that's all from me!
The Bread Thingy - Anonymous - 10-21-2002

Don't know if this helps, but when I did Pompeii et al with the Vergilian Society in '81, our villa majordomo Biagio baked our bread in the same ovens we saw in Pompeii...a large beehive thingy with a large phallus attached. I dunno if that had anything to do with it but man was that sucker HARD!

P.S. The Vergilians had that villa on 99 year lease from Mussolini, it HAS to be original. Wasn't Musso one of Caesar's agitatores in urbe?
Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 10-28-2002

Hi i'm Henny Vreriks from Glanerbrug a little village near the border of Germany (100 feet). I am a new recrute and already posted a topic but to my surprise it is already deleted!!! And not by me, but ok maybe i didn't follow the right procedure or was it something else i don't know.
Well i got interested in the Romans when i was about 7 or 8 years (about 30 years ago) and now i have the time to get more interested in their historic backgrounds. So i was surfing around in search of hoping to find a nice and usefull site well here i am. This is a very usefull and magnificent site if you want to know all about the romans and their history. I was amazed how much information i could get of this site. I am not a re-enactor because of my other hobby's. In life you must choose but if i had more time on one day i surely would have spend more time at it.
So far so good i introduced myself now and i hope i can place a new topic now.
I have only one question and it's about that little image when placing a topic. How do you do that??
I have a nice image of the invincible sun that my tattoo as well but if someone could explane me how it's done (i'm not that handy yet with computers) i would be gratfull.

Thanks Henny

Not Deleted - Just Re-located - Anonymous - 10-28-2002

Hi Henny,

I saw your post a bit ago. It's been moved to the OFF-TOPIC board by the moderator of the board you posted to.

And welcome to Roman Army Talk!
Re: Not Deleted - Just Re-located - Anonymous - 10-28-2002

Thanks Dave,
After i posted the first topic i looked around a bit at RAT and saw i was moved to the other place. For me as a newcomer was that a bit of a surprise but you were so kind telling me also. I read your profile and saw you are an army officer, interesting. I been in the army for 3 years in Holland and was in Bosnia in 1994 for 6 months, in Srebrenica. I also knew a few americans then stationed in South/Germany Wurzburg they were airborne red barets like us but we were called Air Mobile. Funny those guys called us ' the legs'. LOL
We did all on foot and really i have walked and marched a lot
of miles in our army. Well nice meeting you and maybe we' ll meet again on the net.
salve - Anonymous - 11-09-2002

salve!
I'm Mike Burns, I'm presently at the institute of archaeology, university college London, working on my PhD on the South Italian military equipment and methods of warfare. In my previous life I was in the military for seven years, and used to jump out of aircraft and wander around the woods with various automatic weapons. During the summer I'm the project illustrator for the Anglo/American project in Pompeii, which is interesting and great fun! Found lots of slingshot (nearly 200!) and ballista balls from the Sullan siege of the city in 89BC. I am very much interested in both the functional and symbolic aspects of weapons and armour.
