Salvete legionarii

I am Gaius Quintillius Falco.

- where are you from?

Colorado, USA

- how'd you become interested in Rome?

Ever since I went to the opening of the movie "Ben Hur" (the one with Charlton Heston) as a boy (yes, that long ago). I became interested in the military history Rome during my military training and career.

- why are you here?

Further education. I found my way here through the Legio XX Website.

- do you re-enact, are you a student, an academic professional, or..?

A student by nature, otherwise, just an old retired "centurio".
Re: New to the forum(RAT) - Anonymous - 12-31-2002

Salve
I am relatively new to Roman reenactment but have been a student of Medieval European for the past 10 years or so.
I am a professinal horse trainer turned medieval enthusiast turned armoress. I have been building suits of armor for the last 8 years. In the last 3 years my focus has been on equine armor.
As the fates would have it, I moved to Tucson, AZ about 6 months ago and through music, the blues of course, I met Tom Dominick. I'm sure to those who know him this will come as no surprise, but he is definetely one of the most infectiously enthusisatic recruiters I've met in many years.
Tom immediately started quizzing me on armor and my interest in cavalry. I tried for years to get horses into the medieval club in then Phoenix area, an uphill battle. Too much work for your average reenactor.
Basically, I am here for several reasons.
I am truly interested in the equine aspect of reenactment, and I think this may be a conduit for that
As a medieval enthusiast, and being Sicilian, The influence Rome had over history can not be ignored
And I build and sell armor
So here I am to add what I can of my knowledge and services and to learn from the best, always a motto of mine.
You can see examples of my work at [email protected]
Re: New to the forum(RAT) - richsc - 12-31-2002

Ah Bernadette! Welcome to RAT! We missed meeting when I was in Tucson over Thanksgiving, which I do regret. I did have a good conversation with Tom though. He said you were interested in doing Roman armor and castings, and said you were interested in knowing where to start. I did start a thread in the Marketplace area about just that.
No doubt Sean Richards aka Hibernicus (or is it the other way around??) will be quite interested in the cavalry aspect with you.
Please let us know how we can help, and feel free to poke about and jump in.
BTW, I could not get that URL address to work.
Richard Campbell, Legio XX
Re: New to the forum(RAT) - Anonymous - 01-08-2003

Hello,

I'm from Moscow, Russia and my interest in Rome started when I was around 12. It was on / off for a while but now it's definitely on. I found this message board through a link at Boudicca's Land and I mostly lurk and learn. It's an honour to be here.

Re: New to the forum(RAT) - richsc - 01-08-2003

Welcome Kate! We are glad for your opinions and participation, so feel free to join in. From where you are in Russia, how much interest do you see in classical studies, and the study of Rome and its army in particular?
Richard Campbell, Legio XX
Re: New to the forum(RAT) - Anonymous - 01-09-2003

Hi All,
I'm from New Zealand and I've been interested in Rome and Roman (military) history since studying Latin at high school. I ended up with a degree in the classics but until now I'd had to leave my interest dormant.

My relevant main hobby interest is miniature wargaming, but it is only really in the last year that I've branched into Ancient Wargaming. The areas I intend to specialise in are the later Spanish campaigns, North Britain towards the end of Roman rule, the Rhine frontier and the Dacian wars. While I'm not the greatest painter or gamer, I am a keen terrain and building modeller, so my projects will no doubt involve some aspect of the frontier fortifications.

Coming back to the era of Rome has reinforced to me how much I had forgotten and how much I must learn again. The depth of scholarship and discovery since I last studied Roman History has been illuminating.

I'm certainly looking forward to contributing where I can and look forward to participating with you all.
Re: New to the forum(RAT) - Anonymous - 01-09-2003

Thought I'd better introduce myself here...started reading page 1 then realised they are all a year old (Australis still here? Any other Aussies?)..
I'm doing a postgrad diploma in classics with Latin as my major strand, have a widely varied range of interests including Roman personal poetry, Catullus, Military history especially the Gallic wars. A bit of a problem as with my Scottish parentage a part of me always sides with the barbarians! (Didn't you just love the German chieftan at the start of Gladiator!) Have a fledgeling interest in gaming, partly out of interest in understanding historical battles.
Despite really enjoying a Mediaeval tournament in Brisbane a couple of years ago, I'd never really considered re-enactment a I felt females always looked so anachronistic. Anyway I'm not athletic, and I figure there are probably enough wives and girlfriends hanging about to do the domestic duties....
I'd be interested in hearing from other women involved in re-enactment.

cheers
Ave, What\'s up doc? - Anonymous - 01-11-2003

Hallo Jasper,
