Re: intro - Anonymous - 01-28-2003

Salvete!
I guess I should make an introduction finally.
I found my way here from speaking with Hibernicus and Caius Fabius. I've been developing a group of SCAdians who overlap with reenactors. Essentially to raise the bar of authenticity in the SCA specifically in the areas of fighting. Having been a member if the SCA for 14 years I made the change to a Late Roman persona: Caius Livius Germanicus, KSCA.

I've started putting together an umbrella organization called the Colonia (covers reenactors, SCAdians, etc) and my own little fighting unit based on Cohors Sextae Thracum Equitata (much thanks to Mr Amt for his work and encouragement). We'll be working with local fighting groups and spreading a little Pax Romana wherever we go.

I'll be asking a lot of silly quiestions, i'll try and search out the answers before asking to avoid any loss of dignity.

My primary areas of interest are in late roman legion organization, specifically cavalry (I do equestrian stuff too). Hoping to make a roman cavalry saddle this year as well as all my armor bits.
Thank you all for being helpful so far and thank you in advance for assistance in the future.

Valete bene,
Salve Caius! Where do you reenact, and where do you do cavalry? That's a hard and expensive one to do around DC.
Richard Campbell, Legio XX
Re: intro - Anonymous - 01-29-2003

We are out in Washington State and Oregon. A bit more room to ride and play. There aren't many reenactors in the area, but it's changing. Dean Cunningham is doing LEG II AVG across the river in Portland and is getting going with new folks. I'm just getting started out with actual reenactment as opposed to SCA stuff which simply in the same class at all (but we're improving at least in our own encampment). Dean is an excellent armorer so LEG II AVG really has a leg up with him around.

At present i'm still using stirrups. transitioning to a roman saddle and no stirrups is a bit scary. It may be a long summer. Right now there are only two equestrians doing this around here but i'm hoping to start drawing some interest once my kit is looking sharp.

Right now i've got a nice romano-sassanid ridge style spangen, tunica, feminalia , oval shield and caligae and an hand forged spear head on a 1" x 6' shaft. My chain vest is ratty and needs some work before I put it on and I haven't decided whether I want to do a musculata, plumata, squamata, hamata or just a lamellar body piece (did I use all the cool words?)

I'll be making a draco standard this year too!
Greetings from a new recruit - Anonymous - 02-14-2003

Greetings, all, from one of the savage Northmen.

I live out in the hills of Northeast Iowa. I have worked as a computer programmer for years, but have always been a farm boy - at heart and in practice.

I have been involved in living history for an unspecified number (to protect the guilty) of decades. Like many, I started with the North American fur trade. But every year, I turn around and head farther back in time. I have also been blacksmithing for over 2 of those decades. I am very interested in the day-to-day tools of living for the average person. I seek not fame and fortune. I find my solace in the tools and building of the community. I would not march to war, but I would follow to keep them going.

Last year I built an early Viking age blacksmithing shop to travel and demonstrate with. A proper rock and sand side-draft forge, with two single stage bellows to supply the air. Along with this was making all the tools, and learning to use charcoal for fuel. What a learning experience. It also helps me understand how and why various artifacts where originally made.

The fire steels have been one of the items that have lead me on my historical quest through time. Such a simple tool. Yet it was used throughout the ages from the first use of iron and steel, up to present times. (Flint and steel were even used as late as WW I in the trenches!)

A Roman blacksmithing shop? Ah, my quest continues.

My thanks to thee for listening to my ramblings.
hi folks - Anonymous - 03-06-2003

Thought I'd better pop in & say hi - I'vebeen reading hte forum a few months now.

My interest in Rome is primarily as a wargamer - romans were, of course, my first "Ancient" army oh so long ago now - 30 yrs or so, and I retain a general interest in the military history of the age.

I've done a bit of "re-enactment" with the SCA (yeah I know some ppl don't think of it as such but tough! ), a bit of Roman history at 'varsity, and have a bookcase shelf of well-leafed Penguin classics by Caesar, Livy, Tacitus, Polybius (Loeb that one), Dio Cassius (ditto), Seutonius, Xenephon ....oops - he's not actually Roman but never mind....etc.

Cheers

Mike
