Re: NEW RECRUITS - richsc - 05-31-2003

Salve Jean-Luc! Glad to have you here and I hope you enjoy, and feel free to contribute. I was wondering if you have a recent photo of that monument that you might be able to post for us? I'd certainly be interested.
PHOTOS OF MONUMENT - Anonymous - 06-02-2003

I CAN GO AND TAKE A PICTURE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. EVEN THOUGH IT REALLY LOOK LIKE A PILE OF RUBBLES RIGHT NOW. WE ALSO HAVE A DRAWING MADE IN THE 17TH CENTURY WHILE THE MONUMENT WAS STILL UP. WE SCALED IT? AND IT SEEMS TO MATCH THE SIZE OF THE REMAINS PERFECTLY. ALL OUR DOCUMENTATION IS IN THE HANDS OF AN ARCHITECT THAT WE GAVE THE PROJECT TO SO HE COULD MAKE THE ACTUAL PLANS TO SCALE. THE DAY I GET THESE PLANS I WILL BE GLAD TO SEND YOU A COPY, ESPECIALLY AS WE TRY TO GET THE LARGEST CROWD INTERESTED IN THAT PROJECT.

THE MONUMENT ITSELF LOOKED LIKE A THIN PYRAMID RESTING ON A SQUARE BASE IT LOOK ALMOST AS AN OBELISK A BOUT 35 METERS HEIGHT WITH A ROUND BALLOON SHAPE STONE AT THE TOP. iT WAS ERECTED ON THE SPOT OF THE BATTLE OF POURRIERES (THE SECOND BATTLE OF AQUAE SEXTIAE).

Re: NEW MEMBER - richsc - 06-02-2003

Sure, I know folks would be interested. And if you have a conjectural drawing reconstructing the monument that would be a good posting too.
Richard Campbell, Legio XX
POURRIERES MARIUS MONUMENT - Anonymous - 06-03-2003

SALVE RICHARD

I WILL BE PRETTY BUSY FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEK ENDS AS BOTH LEG VIII AND LEG V ARE MAKING THEIR SHOW FIGHTING TWO CELTICS GROUPS IN ST ROMAIN EN GAL (SOUTH OF LYON IF SOMEBODY IS INTERESTED TO COME...) ON THE 14 AND 15 OF THIS MONTH.

AFTER THAT I WILL GO AND PICK UP THE DOCUMENT I WAS TALKING ABOUT, AS WELL AS SOME PICTURES (IT IS ABOUT AN HOUR DRIVE TO WHERE I LIVE) THAT I WILL POST FOR THE ONES THAT ARE INTERESTED.

I CAN ALSO PROVIDE A CD-ROM OF A CONFERENCE THAT WAS GIVEN ON THE SUBJECT. BUT IT IS ALL IN FRENCH....IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IT, I WILL SEE IF I CAN TRANSLATE SOME PARTS BUT IT WILL TAKE TIME, AND TIME IS EXACTLY WHAT I AM MISSING IN MY LIFE...
New Recruit From Legio XXX - Anonymous - 06-12-2003

my name is Decimus Phillipius Arcanius (Dean)
I am a loyal member of Legio XXX based in the niagara region in Canada, under Optio Tiberius Lantanius Magnus (Matt).

I joined the legion in november of 2002, and have been a member ever since. I'm almost fully kitted, and have gone to two events since I joined. One was at Our Lady Mary in Fort Erie Canada, which is an annual SCA event in the Barony of Rising Waters. The other was Roman Days at Marieta Mansion near washington D.C. that is put on by Matt Amt. It was a blast. I'd love to learn anything that will help me be a better re-enactor, and should anyone be interested in joining our legion I urge you to contact please. Also if anyone is interested in some pictures for this years roman days, give me a shout and I will be glad to share.

Re: NEW MEMBER - richsc - 06-13-2003

Once again thank you very much Rich for putting us up,
you were very helpful, and hospitably. You and your family really added to the whole experience for me with your generosity. And despite the renovations, food was in abundance my friend.
Oh ya, did you try the ice wine yet?
Mosaics - richsc - 06-15-2003

Salve Flavius!

YOU have just volunteered for the Legio Hibernia! One does have to start somewhere...

Several of us here also share an interest in mosaics; do you have pictures? The sister-board RomanCivTalk would be a good place to bring that up.
Re: New Recruit From Legio XXX - aitor iriarte - 06-15-2003

Really nice mosaics, Flavius!
You have now the technic and only need to get involved with more complex patterns, even figured ones!
Keep on joining tesellae!
Re: Mosaics - Anonymous - 06-16-2003

Very nice work Flavivs About how long do you think it took you to make them? I recall several times where I've seen pictures of ancient romans leaning on their sides picking through a gerbillion pieces of tile, constructing a mosaic. And I've thought, "Uh uh, nooo way!". Needless to say, I'm very impressed
Re: New Recruit From Legio XXX - Anonymous - 06-16-2003

These ones are small, about 1'x1' and 1.5'x1' and probably took me about 2 weeks each as the tessarae are quite small,Im just itchin to be let loose on a floor! but thats a whole different ball game to doing it on a wall mounted board, but nothing would make me happier to be making a mosaic floor surrounded by thousands of bits of tile!,I got the 'bug' after watching a programme about a dam being built in Turkey,on the Euphrates river, and they had 2 weeks or so to excavate a Roman villa,THEN they found the mosaics in each room, each one an absolute masterpiece,I dont know, something happened to me when I watched them uncover these mosaics as the cameras rolled, and I just decided I would love to do it,to carry on something that was being done thousands of years ago, thats the thrill for me!
Thanks for your kind comments,I appreciate them
FLAVIVS
