I'm a Uni student in Singapore and I did my A-levels equivalent in Malaysia....as a matter of interest,I did History as one of my four subjects....

I'm interested in Roman history mainly for the politicking and military interest....which also explains my buying S:TWMI as well as M:TWVI....

Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 08-17-2003

AVE!
Well, I am new entering the whole "Roman scene" so to speak. I have been interested in Rome all my life, My homes have been in that decor forever (columns, busts, pics, etc. must make me feel at home?)
I am atFt Bragg, NC, USA, Born in the USA and of Italian decent and raised in the USA. I have been around the world (USArmy), (though Regretably, not to Italy) but will visit someday.
I have followed the Warriors path all my life and still serve in the military, though not a legionaire.
Currently I am Law Enforcement and work in various Clandestine positions. hence the "Dissimulo Praefectis" job title.
After going to a costume party and putting together a Roman Soldiers costume, It became a favorite pastime of mine, researching and starting to put together or purchase items. (My spouse calls it an Obsession) eye of the beholder!
What I would like is Help finding a nearby Legion or group to help me and I can meet to travel with on this Journey.
Any help would be appreciated. (i have had no reply from the Ft Bragg chapter)

Thanks

Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 08-19-2003

I have several Romano-Etruscan names which I use for my presentations. I teach at a regional university in Louisiana. While not exactly a reeactor, I am often mistaken for one at classical conventions. I call what I do re-embodiment. I reconstruct ancient clothing and artifacts (in as far as budget and availability of materials go) in as accurate a way as possible and let them teach me their secrets. I have been presenting lecture/demonstrations (mainly on Rome and the toga) for a number of years and several years ago added armor and weapons to help students raised on Hollywood and video games understand the relationship of the armor and weapons of war to the sacred garment of peace: how the toga trained the warrior and kept in in training inside the pomerium. I recently have been granted the funding to expand the presentation to Greek, Carthaginian, Etruscan and women's clothing as well.
My focus seems to straddle the interests and methods of both academic classicism (often wary and dismissive of warfare and the military, even though their students respond to it) and military reenactment (bored and hostile about anything unrelated to battle, until they discover that everything is) while I find that comprehending the connections between ancient warfare and everyday culture illuminates and explains both. While I hold a position in the English department, I teach classical literature and our history department sponsors my presentations and calls on me to represent them at conferences, so I am used to straddling disciplines. You can see more about my presentations at my linked site, but I am here to learn from those who know more than I and to contribute what I can when asked to do so. I take my research very seriously, but not myself; one reason my "Togaman" show are invited for repeats is that I make them engaging, humorous, and irreverent, otherwise I would'nt use Togaman. I use Lucius Cornelius Libo, otherwise, in order to explain facets of naming. At any rate, I look forward to some lively discussions.
a bit about myself - Anonymous - 08-21-2003

Well im from chicago and have recreating a samurai from the sengoku jidai in the sca for 10yrs. I recently got interested in expanding my horizons into roman history and have decided to put a kit together. well actually its likely to be 1 1/2 kits since i want to be able to be in a historically acurate kit or able to fight in my kit in the sca. Ill likely need some multiple pieces to pull that off.

As for what got me interested in rome, well ive always loved history,,,, especially of the military variety. I find the changes over the length of roman history and the way it is the basis for so much that comes later to be extremely interesting.

As for why im here...... to learn. Im not fond of reinventing the wheel. It makes sense when delving into a new area to learn from those that have gone before you. Im interested in information on creating a historical kit, conversions/modification to have the most accurate kit posiible for sca use, and finding out contacts for those interested in rome from the chicagoland area or at least within a couple hrs drive(ill travel for major events but its good to wotk with people locally when possible.)

thanks for taking the time to read this. Id be interested in any help anyone here could provide.
Take care
Kiyohara
P.S. Maybe its time to start working on a roman name???

Salve

Salve omnes

My love for ancient history began when my mom took me to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. That did it, the history bug bit me and I've been afflicted ever since. I used to drive a show pony and it made me feel like a charioteer, so I decided to write a novel where the main character is one.
The user name I chose for R.A.T. is the name of the main character in the book. It is a corruption of the main character's Egyptian name, which the Romans couldn't pronounce.
Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 09-07-2003

Salve Praetorian Prefect:

I have questions...

Were obols used in Rome?
What was the name of the smallest coin? In places, I have seen references to coppers, but not denomination is placed on them. I know the sesterce was worth one fourth of a denarius.

In my story I have a shop keeper making a snide remark about two obols - I need to know if this is correct. My story is pure fiction, but it needs authenticity, too.

Vale.

Salve,
I've been interested in Ancient cultures for a long time mainly Rome and Egypt (hence the name Heqaib) and i am actually planning on doing some re-enactment in the near future, been browzing this site from time to time and seems like this is the place to be to look for the info i need (working on several stories taking place in ancient rome)

Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 09-16-2003

Salve,

I first became interested in Roman history as a small child. My family visited Italy. Standing in the streets of Pompey and Rome something just grabbed me about it. I never pursued it formally but read everything I can. My interest tends to focus on the late republican/early imperial period (approx 100 BC - 100 AD). A rich area of political, social and military history to be sure! I have read the posts on RAT for some time now and decided to join the discussion!
Salvete! glad you decided to join in.
I think there was a smaller coin called an 'as'. I forget how many to the sestersius, but I'll look it up. Obol?
