Hello Calisto,
Maybe some of the group could answer better your questions but I'll try to do it, anyway.
1. It's a good question. Romans had ways of measure short periods of time, like water clocks, clepsidrae. During the day, sun clocks were used, albeit I don't know if they would be of much help in Britain!
2. They simply leapt on them. Most horses were then smaller than mediaeval and modern ones.
3. I'm afraid that they slept on the floor. I've never heard of campbeads in Roman times (that of course, does not mean that they did not exist!)
4. Using flint and fire steel. The available fuels were wood and charcoal.

Hope to have been of some help!
Hi, I'm Luigi from Italy, I'm 20 years old, and I live in a small town 100 KM north of Rome(Viterbo province, Lazio Region). I'm a wargamer and I stay a lot on EZboard, so, seen that I past a lot of time on forums, I like watching here and there about military Hystory, and I think that here I could learn a lot about Romans military organizations(thing that I, even if Italian, have never learned more then a good scholastic level, but of course I'm not a total unknower )
The most things that I like about Roman period are the Barbarian invasions wars and the war against Etrurian and other Italic populations.
Cheers, Luigi
Love your city, defend its colours!Ultras Ternana
Re: new recruit needs info...... - Anonymous - 03-28-2004

hello Luigi!
great to see a real life Roman here too!

is there many archeolegy dig sites around Lazio?

also is there many modern buildings in Viterbo?

Re: new recruit needs info...... - Anonymous - 03-28-2004

Hi agit8! Anyway for what I read around there are some others "real" Romans!

Quote:
is there many archeolegy dig sites around Lazio?

Of course in Rome zone there are a lot; about my province there is a Roman theatre in Ferentum and for what I know there are some intersting Etrusk sites on the sea-side of the province.

Quote:
also is there many modern buildings in Viterbo?

Modern buildings?? Well, even if it is a medieval city, there are also modern buildings... if I give to "modern" the same meaning you do. Do you mean by chance futurist and high buildings?? I can say that it is possible that the buildings are not more then 30 mt high in Viterbo!
Hi Falvius, nice site you have! I think you have to do a lot of work for building up all those armaments!
Love your city, defend its colours!Ultras Ternana
Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 03-29-2004

This is me climbing aboard and making a posting or at least I hope that I am.

I am a Police Officer approaching the end of my Service and at 30 yrs I must be overdue for a little farm in the provinces!

I do not however intend to stop work yet and plan, upon retirement next year to qualify as an Advocatus to give it its latin name but more specifically a solicitor.

I was interested in Roman History at secondary school but when I went to buy myself a book to explore the subject, I was sold a large academic work on Rizla thin paper with minute writing - that was the end of that!

I stumbled back into the subject after seeing a recommendation of Simon Scarrow in The Times Newspaper. having read all his books to date, I devoured Conn Iggulden's books and am now wading through Rubicon which of course leads on nicely from Conn's last work.

New Recruit looking for a roman post. - Anonymous - 04-03-2004

Ave.

My name is Antonius Febius and I became interested in Roman Legions since a very early age. I have done alot of research and specially while station with the military in Europe.

I'm currently interested in finding a re-enactment group near my home town of Chicago, Illinois. If anyone knows of one please send me some information.

Salve

Re: new recruit needs info...... - richsc - 04-05-2004

Salvete Nullum and Febius,

There may well be some Illinois group out there: check the Legio XX website www.larp.com/legioxx/groups.html and see what Matt Amt's added lately.

Nullum, from what part of the world do you hail? If you've read Conn & Simon, you absolutely must also read John Maddox Robert's SPQR series, and if you like the idea of Roman detectives, try Stephen Saylor and Lindsey Davis. I own every edition of all these authors.
Legio XX
New recruit from the other side of the Limes - ghandi - 04-06-2004

Hello Romans!
My Name is ghandi and I´m a member of the group CHASUARI, displaying germanic warriors of the 1st ct AD. I´m also a member of the auxillary COH I GERM group, both located in northern Germany. Have a look on the page´s banner and you see the Germanorum guys with the green round shields and me on the left edge (a foto taken at Xanten 2001).

Displaying germanic warriors of 1st. ct is not that spekulative furry undertaking as even Osprey and other publications express. There are enough archaeological sites and finds to get a good picture.

Well, I hope having a "barbarian" here won´t upset roman vanity ?

cheers
