Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 07-26-2004

My name is Brandon,
I am from Mahopac New York.
I became interested in Roman History in High school when reading military history before I joined the Marine Corps.
I am a student of Rome in the sense of I do it on my own time.
I am also trying to become a Re-enactor. After reading Dan Petersons book, I would love to bring Rome to life.
I am here to learn and to meet new people.
My other name is after Emporer Augustus, Gius Ceasar Octavianus.
Hope to talk later.

Edited by: GiusCeasarOctavianus at: 7/26/04 9:49 pm

Re: NEW RECRUIT and looking for info. - Lucius Aurelius Metellus - 08-03-2004

Hello everyone, I am new to Roman reenactment, I am interested in the late period. I am partners with Tom Knighton in starting our new late Roman group in south Georgia, USA, the Secunda Brittanica. I am 35 years old, a veteran of the US Army 101st Airborne Division, and I am currently employed as an electrical lineman, but suffered a severe back injury on the job, so I am home recuperating and praying to be able to return to normal after major surgery. I am married and a father of four. I have had an intense passion for all things Roman, particularly the army, since I was five years old. I truly look forward to making friends with all of you, and learning from you, too!
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, miles gregarius, Secunda Brittanica

RE: new recruits - Tasciavanous - 08-03-2004

I am 28 and reasonably new to roman re-enactment but I have been "in the hobby" for the last 12 years. my chosen impression is of a British Auxiliary from the 1st C. I am a member of the Vicus group who are as far as I know the only full contact combat re-enactors of this period in Britain. I look forward to being able to discuss this amazing military entity we call the roman army with other like minded people from around the world.

Re: NY state Group - Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus - 08-04-2004

Welcome aboard, you will find a great many reenacters that have a lot of experience in that area. Also view our links section at romanarmy.com for links to other reenactment sites we have found.
THERE ARE NO STUPID PEOPLE, ONLY PEOPLE STUPID ENOUGH TO NOT KNOW WHEN THEY'VE MADE A MISTAKE

Re: NEW RECRUIT and looking for info. - Robert Vermaat - 08-04-2004

Hi Lucius,

Welcome to RAT, and it's so good to have another Late Roman on board! We have spoken already on the Segontium forum.
Here's my version of the Secunda Britannia shield (left):

Like it?
Are there any more Late Romans near you guys? It may be hard to recruit, but at least there's two of you, and Fectio knows (we're just two as well, for now) that it can be done!
Re: NEW RECRUIT and looking for info. - Lucius Aurelius Metellus - 08-04-2004

Hi Robert!
Your shield(s) are beautiful! Do you use that particular design very much, or the Fectio design?
Right now, there are only two of us, but we have some interested prospects, hopefully they will join, but that is yet to be seen.
We are both ex-SCA members who yearned for something more authentic and historical than the SCA offers, and we are both avid Roman history buffs, so we decided to leave the SCA and create the Secunda Brittanica here.
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, miles gregarius, Secunda Brittanica

Re: GA Secunda Brittanica - Anonymous - 08-04-2004

And we already have a couple lined up as possible recruits. So if they decide to join, we'll be in pretty good shape considering
Re: NEW RECRUIT and looking for info. - Felix - 08-04-2004

Greetings, one and all. My interest is in military history in general, particularly pre-gunpowder warfare. The roman army was a significant milestone in the development of warfare, and lurking here has proven most useful. However, I do feel the urge to put in a few cents worth of opinion from time to time, so here I am.

Re: NEW RECRUITS - Quintius Clavus - 08-05-2004

Hi there, Brandon,

I thought your home town sounded familiar to me. I may be the closest reenactor to you. I live in Connecticut. Like you I've had a lifelong interest in the Roman Army. I have been reenacting for about 3 years now, and have full kit for an impression of an early/mid 1st Century AD legionary.

Welcome to Roman Army Talk, a great group of people. You can get help, info, advise and camaraderie from all here and learn about and discuss many different aspects of the Roman military.
Brand new. Making 8 sets of theatre grade lorica segmentata, scuta, helmets, etc.

Dang. It's a lot to do before Christmas.

Learning a lot. Cut my thumb on a Kierkriese hinge while drilling. Glued all my left fingers together installing support strips for scuta. Hit myself on the head with the shaft of a pilum. Needed a bandaid. Sigh. This is fun. I'm hooked now. Porro per nebulam.

I'm from Texas, USA, and after all these prelims are done, I'm going to make a reenactor quality 1st C AD Legio X F kit. I'm old, but not dead yet.
Re: NEW RECRUIT and looking for info. - Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus - 08-15-2004

Welcome to RAT. There are many different ways to find out about reenactment as there are people here who head up their own groups and have done so for a long time. Also welcome Felix welcome to RAT. if you go to the off topics section there are numerous topics about wars and events that don't have to do with Rome. So check it out.
THERE ARE NO STUPID PEOPLE, ONLY PEOPLE STUPID ENOUGH TO NOT KNOW WHEN THEY'VE MADE A MISTAKE

Re: NEW RECRUITS - taira1180 - 08-18-2004

Hi!
I'm portuguese and i'm a archivist.
I enjoy playing DBA (a wargame with figures). I'm not a re-enactor. I have participate in several archaeology excavations (in the north of portugal- pre-roman and roman period).
I have always liked roman history, but now i have change my taste from the republican to late imperial period.
I have also a blog called "Roma antiga", (it's in portuguese, sorry!) with two other guys.
Re: NEW RECRUITS - Anonymous - 08-19-2004

Hey all, I'm from Newcastle NSW, Australia and studying Medical Herbalism at the moment.

I can't quite remember how I became interested in Rome...it was even before I played Centurion: Defender of Rome on the Amiga 500. (Which was 14 years or so ago) I guess I've always liked their architecture, the invention or aquaducts and their ability to conquer so much of the known world.

As for why I'm here, I'm looking to get into re-enacting the Roman period (1st C AD is good) if there are any Aussie groups out there looking for new members. I came here in the hopes that I would find some people from Australia...and if not, perhaps some good conversation.
