ME! - Anonymous - 03-15-2002

- where are you from?

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

You know, big place, cowboys (cows optional hehe), '88 Olympics (hey that's Roman, opps Greek, well hehe it'll do)

- how'd you become interested in Rome?

Part A- Ever since my great-great-great-(repeat as needed)-grandfather; Octavian Ceaser failed to let me back-stab him and take over the 'familiy business' I've been working my way back into position to take over what was the Roman Empire (plus some colonies in Canada- Calgary and Vancouver will do).

Part B- Seriously though, it's just a rich part of history.

- why are you here?

See part A above. ODE EM

Umm, well that and I've taken to playing alot of Roman era board games, like Pax Romanum, Circus Maximum, Britannia (ok that ones only a bit Roman)... and I thought I wanted to get some back ground material since historical questions sometimes arise and I like to learn.

Oh, I wanted mind finding a different board to host my online Circus Maximus campaign as well, but that's just a random shot in the dark.

- do you re-enact, are you a student, an academic professional, or..?

I'm neither, as such, I'm and enthusiast!

-Cheers, Jonathan.

Re: Newbies - Anonymous - 03-25-2002

Salve! I'm a first time poster; moderate time reader.

Well, guess my interest in Rome started with the movie Spartacus. Kinda hooked after that on history and especially the history of Assyria, Greece, Rome, and Parthia. Besides, always used to play soldier with the boys in the neighborhood. I'm a tomboy.

I'm originally from the West Coast but I study at a major university in the Midwest. I'm here because I'm interested in Roman military and just seems like a neat place.

I'm a student/academic almost done with undergrad. work. With interest to Rome my areas of emphasis in philosophy (if you can tell my the handle). Lies in Ancient Philosophy (Egypt, Greece, Rome, Middle Ages) with a concentration in ethics/socio-cultural impact, and metaphysics.

You can tell I'm a student I've written this long post in what could be summarized in about six sentences.
What is a poet? An unhappy person who conceals profound anguish in his heart but whose lips are so formed that as sighs and cries pass over them they sound like beautiful music. Soren Kierkegaard Either/Or

Just curious...what kind of work does one find with the subjects you're studying? Or are your studies for just personal enrichment?
Rules For Posting

Re: NEW RECRUITS - Robert Vermaat - 03-25-2002

Hi All,
I'm a new recruit, then?

OK; I'm from The Netherlands, I'm a trained historian and a re-enactor (though only a short time yet). I was always interested in Rome, for as long as I vcan remember, it must have been the holidays with my parents to Germany, where the remains of the Limes still fascinate me. My interest in Roman Britain started with the books by Rosemary Sutcliff, Eagle of the Ninth to be precise. I'm here because (nice metaphysical question: WHY ARE WE ALL HERE?) I followed a thread about discussing the Late Roman Army.

Cheers,
Hoi Robert,
Well, as you can see, you've posted so much by now you're a gregalis, you've passed the recruiting stages.
Welcome to the board, another Dutchmen on the lists! What part of Holland do you live in? Which reenactment group are you a member of?
If it's anything like what i'm going to commit myself to eternal penury for come October then personal enrichment is the only sort knocking about.
Unless the Persians fly away like birds, hide in the earth like mice, or leap into a lake like frogs, they will never see their homes again, but will die under our arrows

Re: NEW RECRUITS - Catiline - 03-25-2002

It seems you've been very close to my house Robert. I'll go tramping through Englishcombe and past the wansdyke on my way back from the pub tonight. Hopefully it won't seem like a good idea to try and find it in the dark
Unless the Persians fly away like birds, hide in the earth like mice, or leap into a lake like frogs, they will never see their homes again, but will die under our arrows

re - Anonymous - 03-25-2002

LOL! yes. I suppose I was rather easy to spot. To answer the question though. See, the REAL philosophical question that philosophy majors try and answer is now what good will this do me?

Seriously, that is why I'm also doing studies in sociology, I find they fit and it gives me a little more leeway in career path. Well, my philosophy major is partially for personal pleasure and improvement because it is an area I enjoy greatly. With my track (including grad. and PH.D work) I hope to actually teach at a college level. It also allows me to work with archeologists, translators, and others who work with recovering texts and the discovery of new or lost Classical texts.
