these are great. do most guys then cover teh entire shield in leather and then paint it with milk paint? some of them look to have no bronze on them at all

Best impression of "Athena Promachos" I have seen so far.

The Aegis on the shoulders is particulrly interesting.

A whole goatskin was trimmed for the aegis (Ebay). The front has a small bronze Gorgon head . The snakes are small toy "realistic" semi-flexible hard rubber junkers that were stitched on with heavy thread. That didn't last. They are now attached with copper wire loops. I will look for a front view this weekend. The peplos is 100% linen. Lots of work - but I had fun. I'm looking for an artisan to teach me how to make an aspis with a wood turning machine. That's a long term project - vehicle insurance gets paid first!

The snakes on the Aegis appera on Athena Afea of the Aeginitans or Athena Promachos of the Athenians.

Please see making a hoplon thread for advice and info.
Depending on the shield device you choose you can reenanct
Athena-(title) of whatever city state.

Thank you! I enjoyed the process, even when do-overs were required. The alternate paint style (Greek wave pattern) came about when I simply could not incise the pattern with any degree of control. The correct tools and jigs might have solved that problem, but it all worked out...
