Romans vs Falx - M.ilionario - 08-31-2006

Please forgive me if I'm asking something already answered.
Is it true the romans altered their armor when they started fighting against falx armed warriors?
What changed?
Which peoples used the falx?

Francisco, go to the Search facility and type in 'Dacian Wars armour' (and also do 'Armor' - different spelling). See what it comes up with.

Also try 'falx helmet'.

There has been a lot of discussion on this over the years, and it's always worth using the Search facility  Use it like Google, it can come up with unexpected threads that are also interesting.

Very good pic
What I still don't understand is how could they fight with such arm protections :?

falx question - claudia crisis - 09-01-2006

A lot of changes in armour in helmet design (strengthening cross bracing) & possibly earlier lorica seg, could be from changing enemies and weapon types, but not necessarily just the falx.

Arm protections - suggestyou try making some (out of card perhaps) then experiment with the internal strapping and whether you wear them on the inside or outside of the arm - those are some of the variations which have bounced around. The arm protectors did exist - thats a known given - examples include one found at Newstead (fragmentary) & nice all together one from Carlisle. So obviously they did work. Also what isnt known is how widespread their use, & whether only for specific units/functions.

But notice in this photo from the Adamklissi metopes (from the link Favi provided) that the manica plates overlap upwards, not downwards.

I have such a manica and it really doesn't bother me when I wear it.

Re: Romans vs Falx - M.ilionario - 09-01-2006

Is that made of metal or leather?
If it's metal it's odd that it doesn't bother you, doesn't your arm get stuck sometimes?

Curiously opposed to the one I posted... it's curious... then they could have been overlapped both ways? It's been said that those metopes are free of artistic convention. :?

You're absolutely right. Curious indeed :? I completely missed that in your post.

Francisco, metal manica have been found in a military context, so thus far they were metal.

Crossbracing on the helmets, the manica as well as occra were a direct result of Trajan's campaigns in Dacia.

My manica overlaps as well, you wouldn't want the plates overlapping towards the wrist, this would create gaps in the plates where sharp pointy things could get snagged on.
