It would have been this type of shield...

With either a wooden umbo or possibly with an umbo like this...

The republican scutum was approximately 1.20m long (Polybius VI.23.2-5 states 4 Roman feet, which is equivalent to 1.18m

The shield in the picture (from Fayum) is 1.28m.

Ave!

Here are a couple owned by Legio XX members:

http://www.larp.com/legioxx/hastati.jpg

Tom, on the left, is holding my shield, and Owen on the right has Tom's shield and my helmet. Mix and Match Day, I guess. My shield is 50 inches tall by 25 inches wide (around the curve), but came out too narrow and straight-sided. Tom's is a much better shape, and a tad shorter and wider. My boss is wood, and the vertical spines on both shields are wood as well.

Vale,

Matthew
