Subject: X-ray Fluorescence

The current volume of ZPE contains an account of our initial
experiment in using x-ray fluorescence at the Cornell synchrotron
(CHESS) to read the texts of abraded Greek and Latin inscriptions. A
brief press release appeared in the Cornell Chronicle:
The technique appears to be very promising. If its promise holds up,
our plan is to develop a portable device.

The Cornell team would welcome collaboration with scholars in
Europe who have access to inscriptions and a synchrotron.

We are also in need of suitable ancient inscriptions, i.e.
stones with abraded texts, which we could borrow from North American
collections. To date we have borrowed stones from Columbia, New York
University, and Johns Hopkins. If you are aware of suitable stones
in North American collections, I would be very grateful for the
information.

I believe OSU has a big collection of epigraphy. They might be interested.
Greets!
