Glad to hear one of the techniques worked well for you, and glad you're looking to 'experiment' to see what else will work.
For rubber-soles, I think it's just going to have to come down to making a pair specifically for the rubber sole, being that the leather would need to be stitched to the rubber - much like modern boots - to make sure nothing falls off or gets worn off at the wrong time.
but anyway - at least you didn't fall! I've had that happen to me three times now in the 7+ years of doing this stuff. (and a number of near-misses) Once was more than enough
