Ok, Rustius, it certainly won't hurt to ask, anyway. I have studied some archaelogical drawings of two spear heads of this type that were found at the Roman fort at Chesters, and it seems that the blades (at least on these two examples) were fairly flat in cross section, as opposed to some that are oval or diamond shaped in cross section. These two examples didn't even have the mid-rib, they are just flat. If this is indeed the case, they would not be very hard at all to reconstruct. The sockets were not even closed completely. I may have to get out in my shop in the back yard and fire up the old home made forge...
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, miles gregarius, Secunda Brittanica
Edited by: Lucius Aurelius Metellus at: 9/7/04 6:07 pm

If what you are saying is correct, the you would almost not even require a forge. Just cut out the shape, and a little bending. I'll bet if you laser cut a shape into say 1/4" metal and do some heavy duty filing you could come up with a very good looking replica. where are the pictures of these spearheads?
I took the pic from a booklet entitled 'What the soldiers wore on Hadrian's Wall' by H.R. Robinson and illustrated by R. Embleton. H.R.R. probably took it form an excavation report or the like...
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Ave Rustius,
Yeah, that's what I have been thinking, too. Aitor was kind enough to show me the picture of the spear heads recovered from Chesters. Perhaps he would be willing to post them here? I like the 1/4" laser cut idea...you could just heat it a little in the forge, enough to make it easy to wrap the socket into place, but you are right, it would certainly not be entirely necessary.
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, miles gregarius, Secunda Brittanica

I had the blacksmith look at the pictures of the spear heads and he's convinced he can do them, however it will as you assumed, be very costly...but then when you want the very best, it is often expensive. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
