The excavations at Barkhausen (Minden / Porta Westfalica) have been ended. Here is overviewish article, and part of it turns out to be a Roman marching camp from the age of Drusus/Tiberius/Varus after all.

Thanks for posting the latest report, Jona.
It seems that we still do not have our defensive ditch, but the four reported pits have become 11 Roman field ovens, which is good enough for me! They seem confident that they have a camp "from the period of the military offensives between 12 BC and AD 16". The C14 dating (always very imprecise) apparently indicates some time within the 200BC-AD10 bracket (although they have not quoted the standard deviation), but the 30 coins apparently include examples from AD 16. In that case, probably not Varus' headquarters. |
