Major Greek/Hellenistic Event in the UK – 2012
#1
Major Greek/Hellenistic Event in Bedford, UK – 2012 21st - 22nd July 2012.

The organisers have asked me to advertise this event on RAT, and try and generate interest amongst Greek re-enactors.

The Bedford River Festival is held biannually in Bedford, England, on the banks of the River Great Ouse. It was founded in 1978 to celebrate the completion of a navigable route, by water, between Bedford and the coast. It is the main tourist-attracting event in the town and the second largest free outdoor event in the UK. Over 350,000 visitors attended the 2010 event.

http://www.bedfordevents.co.uk/index.php/river-festival

It has several events and attractions over the two days, usually including bands on the main stage, 2 community stages and acoustic stage, a road parade, boat shows/races, a raft race for local teams and a firework display. Along with the normal attractions of the fun fair, the River Festival also hosted the sports village, where local sports clubs could come and demonstrate their wares. In 2012 the event will be strongly linked to the Olympic Games and all things Greek.Confusedmile:

The 'authentic area' is right next to the arena, with grass and a few trees, with a small area for the horses. The main re-enactment groups in the UK are invited, and I have been asked to provide a couple of Greek cavalrymen, costs permitting! I’ll also try and tempt suitably dressed Comitatus members along. Putting on a display of Greek cavalry in the UK is a bit of a dream for me. Traders and demonstrators have been invited, including a potter and a bronze caster. The larger the authentic campsite, the better. But a hall is available for re-enactors to use as a base and for sleeping, with an area for modern plastic tents.

It would be great to have as many foreign re-enactors there as possible. It would be brilliant to aim for a major gathering of Greek and Hellenistic re-enactors. Hopefully a second Greek/Hellenistic event will be arranged for the weekend before/after the festival, to make the journey worthwhile. Two major events on successive weekends would be a great experience.

Please feel free to register an interest. Big Grin

Hi John

The Hoplite Association will definitely be there - we're treating it as our flagship 2012 event, with big things planned :-)

It's listed on the events calendar on our website: www.hoplites.org

There has been some interest from a few international groups, notably Athena Promakhos, but they're concerned about the fact that it's only a one weekend event, which may not justify the time, effort and expense of travel. Do you have any more details about the proposed additional event either the weekend before or after?

John, I'll contact you off list. I might be able to attend, but would have be dependent on you for tack and mount, which may be completely undoable! But i do have a pretty good Athenian Hippeis impression.. and I may be in the UK those dates...

Sounds good. An Athenian Hippeis .... I'll expect long hair, perfume and a fancy cloak.

No I don't have any idea of the location of a possible second event, but let us just go and make an event happen. It should not be too hard in the Olympic year.

Sparta Mora will also be attending and, like the HA, this will be our main event for 2012 which we have been training hard for all year. We also have some special events/displays planned and look forward to meeting lots of other fellow Greek re-enactors there.

I am really looking forward to seeing everybody there. Next season will be a very very busy one for Comitatus and I am glad to say this is not the only Greek evevnt we will be doing. The London Loympics make 2012 unlike any other. Hopefully we can team up together at other events. :-)

I'll be there too
(Just have to complete a 8' square pebble mosaic between now July  )

PS What period are you Greek groups representing? The earliest mosaics I can do are only 5th BC with the latest, 3rd BC.

Our cavalry, all of two horses, will do Scythian, 5th century through to Macedonian. The rest of the guys will be largely around 400 BC. Think Xenophon's Anabasis, with a hint of things to come. Mercenaries on tour.

We should have done some stuff celebrating the torch relay by then and will be getting in the Greek mood.

Looking forward to seing you there. Bring lots of stuff to sell. Greek and Roman.

We re-enact 5th Century BC, largely encompassing the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars.

This event needs some Persians - to prevent Greeks getting all the attention.

Who can be the brave, lone guy to appear on such an event in Persian gear?

I am sure you would be welcome as a Persian.

I would imagine that clients have just thought to "book Greeks" due to an Olympic theme.

But come along and join the fun.

The weekend after Bedfordwe will be heading up to the Yorkshire Living History Festival with an Olympic theme. It is a multi period event and others are welcome to join us.

And before Bedford in June we will be doing an Olympic torch related event with four horses which should be excellent. Smile

I wonder how the Greek-minded crowd would like me riding in on horseback and demanding "earth and water in the name of Darius" with a loudspeaker.

Now, I'm back to work on my quilted cuirass.

You'll probably either 1. End up in a pit or 2. End up in a well
