Titus, your impression has a nice feel about it. How are
you finding the big tunic?

Thanks. Material (coarse linen) bought at the Ikea shoping store - standard cloth 150 cm (59 inches) wide, lenght 260 cm (102 inches). Washed due to considerable shrinkage, then cut and sewn. Final size 125*125 cm (49*49 inches). Head and arms openings 30 cm (12 inches).

I'm certain of it! It took me a few years of upgrading kit when finances allowed, so stick with it! You've made a great start!

The shoulder section is attached to the main body of the shirt, just the same way that the torso section is. (scales linked with 1mm brass wire then sewn on to the backing with artificial sinew thread). The backing is made of thick linen canvas.

OK, same as mine, although I skipped the artificial sinew for a cotton thread. This is my first one, after all. Also I have use far less many scales, much larger ones too. Next time I'll change that - mine are too thick and tend to 'stand out' at curved sections such as the shoulders.

It fastens down the left side with a leather thong. I left a V opening in the back of the collar to allow for putting it on which fastens with a wooden toggle

Good thought! Could you show me a detailed picture of the side fastening? I use a much cruder system: two straps.

Ok Robert, here's a photo I took during the construction of the shirt

(it's my first one too! And I never want to make another!) :?

I left enough leather overhanging the scales to pass a leather thong through from the top down. When drawn tight, I pass the long free end under the last row of scales at the bottom of the shirt which keeps it secure.

When it is pulled tight, there is only one seam visible as the front overlaps the back. If you use a long enough lace and knot both ends, you never have to re-lace it. Just put it on over your head like a mail shirt.

Just lacing..
Can you fasten that on your own? I mean, I used leather thongs last year and found out I could not fasten them on my own, hence the straps this year.

I gather you drilled holes through all the scales to get your lacing of the leather edging that neat? What leather did you use?

Yes, it's incredibly easy and simple to fasten it on my own. All I need to do is pull the lace down and tighten it and it's done! As I said, leave a long enough lace so that you can loosen it enough to put on and take off like a mail shirt.

I did have to drill some of the holes for the edging around the arm holes, but the collar I didn't need to because of the alignment of the scales own holes.

Due to overlap of the scales at the collar (from the curve) I did have to snip off the corners of the scales, otherwise they overlapped the stitching holes. Like this..

The leather is 2.5 - 3.0mm vegetable tanned calf leather. Very sturdy! I had to oil it well and pre-punch the holes before I stitched it to the armour.

It’s a good fit. The only draw back is that it makes a nice ringing tone when hit – with my head still inside!!! Some thing that John from Comitatus seems to enjoy demonstration to the crowd, They seem to enjoy the sound though.
