Partially tinning metal surfaces

I have read that yellow ochre mixed with water makes a paste that can be used as a solder resist - both for low heat solders like tin/lead and high heat, like silver solder and brazing. I have yet to try it, so I cannot comment on whether tin could be wiped to a smooth surface with a resist present.
