Like Michael J. Taylor said, it should be plain. The reasoning is as follows:
1. Even though Samnites used metal belts, no depictions of Romans having them have been found, IIRC.
2. Hastati were supposed to be young men up to 26 years of age. They´d have mostly limited resources and as such most of these would be put towards procuring the best armour and arms they could procure.
What property would your young hastatus be entitled to? Is he of the first property class or one of the poorer ones?
