Roman ReEnacting Legion in Florida?
#16
Ya i noticed it drastically changed overnight. I was there one day, book marked the page and tried to return 24 hours and later and it was gone.

I will definitely be needing help trying to put together a nice kit for a reasonable cost (students budget.) To bad i cant get scholarship or loans to cover this as an Study program or something....

Plan now is to try and grab it piece by piece. I noticed that it seems in the past it was hard to get items in a timely manner especially with depeeka. Is there one site that seems to have a larger stock than others?

I'd say shop around...email the website owner and see what they have in stock.

Also, try and make most of it yourself, you'll save a TON of money using only basic tools. Try Matt Amt's site, and read the "Legionary Handbook"
www.larp.com/legioxx/

Making your own gear takes longer (sometimes) than ordering, but you'll save money and also have a greater sense of accomplishement. Worry not about your skill level or what tools you have...most gear can be built with basic tools and basic skills. Plus you've got us here as a resource to help, or if you join a legion they're an even better resource.

If you want to join us here in Legio XI, we'd love to have you. We have members living all over GA as well as AL.

We also have four complete loaner kits for you to use as you get started in the hobby. Usually takes a guy about a year to assemble a basic kit.

Also, check out our Yahoo! Groups site.

Not only that, but Edge is more than willing to give you the clothes off his back. No really...I've heard tales of him going nude-o just to show up celtic chieftans!

Seriously, fall in with Edge's group...you can't go wrong. (but really ask him about the nude incident with the celtic chieftan, it's a great story! )

Ya that Celtic Chieftain incident will have to elaborated on.

I would definitely like to come there for an event. I will look the site over and the Yahoo Group site. I would like to start gathering up a few pieces of the kit soon.
I was going to start with the Helmet and sword. I see the tunic is recommended to get early on as well. Recommendations on those 3? Or hints as to what other gear should be early on the list?

I was looking at the Mainz and Pompeii Gladius from Depeeka.

As well as the Imperial Gallic Helms, i see the G is recommended but overused. Is the Gallic "C" recommended?

And as for tunic where is the best place? LaWrensNest seems to have good tunics and cloaks so i have been thinking of grabbing a tunic and Sagum from them.

Speaking of which...which is better Sagum vs. Paenula?

Well, if you're seriously considering joining Leg XI, then Edge can probably help you out with most of your questions.

For me personally, I like to get my basic soldier's gear done first...tunic (super easy to do!), sandals and belt. Swords can be purchased fairly cheaply for basic ones. The Mainz and Pompeii from Deepeeka are great choices.

Helms...ask Edge...it depends what era you're doing, so some may be ok while others are too late or too early.

Sagum...well, I prefer them. doubles easier as a blanket, but it's a personal choice. You can usually make one cheaper as well.

Have you checked out local suppliers for wool, linen and leather Travis? You may be able to get the materials yourself and make some of your own gear.

Hi Travis,

Go to our website: www.11thlegion.com

Look at the index on the left side of the homepage. Click on the page marked "Handbook for Legionaries." Scroll down to the section entitled "Assembling Your Basic Kit." It tells you the order in which I recommend you acquire your basic kit.

The first thing you will need before you get anything else is caligae.

If you want to join Legio XI, don't buy squat unless you contact me. I'll save you a whole lot of time and money.

My email is on the website in the "contact us" section, as well as my phone number.

There is a Group in orlando it is living history and reenactment orientated. it takes it impressions, kit, outlook and information very seriously and is always seeking to keep its authenticity standards high. It is as John Mentioned small but growing and is always ready to welcome new members interested. The Orlando group is NOT a SCA group. The next events for the year ending 2008 is :
a militaria show ( expecting it to cancel due to hurricane )
Pompeii Exhibit in Carolina
Roman Days
an educational display for the school board or lake county in november
