The festival became extra-special today when, unbeknownst to the 'victims' involved, Paul Karremans and Peter de Haas were distinguished as members of the Dutch Order of Oranje-Nassau for their efforts and achievements in Reenactment, and Roman reenactment specifically. They got the awards pinned on their Roman kit during the first demo this morning by the Burgomaster of Nijmegen, on behalf of her Majesty Queen Beatrix. [attachment=0:2kyprxv7]<!-- ia0 PaulandPeter.jpg<!-- ia0 [/attachment:2kyprxv7]Roman reenactment has now officially been recognized at the highest levels of Dutch society! Big Grin Well done guys!
Greets!

Indeed it was a special day and it's difficult what was the most excited moment, it was all very professional.

For a short impression see the articles on my blog Romeinenfestival Nijmegen and de geestelijke wapenrusting (the armor of God) where I used photo's I took today.

The weather was not that bad. Just one or two serious shower and a few light ones, but not the rainy day that was forecast. And the temperature did not feel like 14C either.

Some pics of the day and some more here.

It was a wonderful event. I'm still very tired, but it was worth all the effort for sure. All groups worked together very good, we had both a nice military as well as a civilian encampment with lots of great stuff to see and do. Thanks everyone who was there for making it a success!

They were! Largest contingent (I think) and very visible, making a good show of it. And apparently Nijmegen has some good bars, so the appreciation was mutual.

That's what I said, but it seems that's not the case. They got rid of the meat/fat though.

I was hoping to get there myself, but work commitments meant no way Jose!

Perhaps some day.

I can not let the Fectienses' Dux take all the glory, so here are some pictures I made in Noviomagus...

Day I:

The skies over Noviomagus on saturday: we feared a generous dosage of airborne aqua pura...

The Pannonian gladiators, earning their keep:

...while centurio Cordvs is trying to make sense of the local tax records...

While elsewhere in the camp, the Legio XV Primigenia was apparently worried their soldiers would not find their vexillo:

...and the very, very, VERY late Roman army was itching to show their top-secret new prototype ballista

The horseboys were also having fun:

(note: charging a ballista head-on: not necessarily a very good idea... :? )

Great fun was had with a barbarian 'volunteer'...

Meanwhile, Noviomagus being the capital of the Civitas Batavorum, you could also find some actual Batavians in the camp...

...and the draco of the Ala Prima Tracum (the Timetrotter Roman cavalrymen), once stationed at Fectio (Vechten) in Germania Inferior, felt quite at home Tongue

Gimme that old-time religion...
