I think that I am like many others who do feel that Rome will ever be the Eternal City, they took democracy from the Greeks and we in the western world followed them.

So, does this mean rome still exists, but as divided remnants?

Sure it does. More correctly, the idea and lessons of Rome still endure, even if Rome as an entity is history. Much of Europe speaks languages based on Latin, call themselves citizens of their states; a Roman concept. My country was based largely on the Roman Republic, with a Senate, written table of legal protections and all. And there's Papacy, which has already been mentioned.

On a less serious note, if Rome had endured till now, anyone outside of central Italy would likely still be a hick barbarian, but we'd get to watch gladiators with chainsaws and UZIs on TV after earning another day's denarius at the office.

Ha! I'd rather watch a 10 minute gladiator match than 1 hour of Big Brother any day!

lol I can safely say the same... I find it ironic we condemn the romans as barbaric for their spectacles of blood and gore when today's people rejoice in viewing our much more sophisticated and humane reality shows....

You're spot on. I'm not saying I'd feel overly comfortable watching people batter and kill each other but the public likes to see people scared on "I'm A Celebrity Get Me Outta Here"... they often watch motor racing/boxing etc for when things go wrong.. violent computer games and films sell well.

In my humble opinion that's only a few rungs down the ladder.

Hmmn, the romans were pretty honest, they liked the primevil instinct of conflict and violence and boasted about it! Today we hide our liking of such things under the guise of arguments, fights and so on as seen in Smackdown, BB, and other things...

I tell you, one day we will go full circle and have TV shows such as ''The Running Man'' ....
