Quote:I just thought I would also say hello. I have watched the posting on RAT for a while but have, sofar, not become involved in a more 'overt' way. Following the setting up of a working group for kit I was invited in and so I suppose I had better make the most of it!
My field is Greek though, not Roman. I am one of the initial members of the Hoplite Association in the UK and have been, since its inception, a member of the Association exec.
Welcome to RAT!

Feels like it anyway. I've returned after a long absence.
I'm a retired geologist and materials scientist. My interest in ancient history dates from the time I learned to read. My interest in ancient Rome and Romans dates from the release of the 1959 release of the film Ben Hur—I was more interested in the Romans than I was in the religious aspects of the film.
I am currently working on two things of interest here: an alternate history in which the Empire manages to evolve and survive, eventually reaching interstellar capability; and a fictional life of Cassius Chaerea.
Yes, I know the alternate history thing has been done—poorly, IMHO—before. Why an alternate history? Because in the real history, the best people either lose or die, often both. Roman history from Julius Caesar on is often very depressing.

Huh?
I have nothing, whatsoever, to do with teletubbies.
How many teletubbies can you fit on a pilum?
Not nearly enough!!!
Same goes for smurfs and barnoids.

Hello All
I am just getting started on the Forum.
I read Cesar's commentaries when I was 9 and have been hooked on Roman history ever since.
I am currently constructing a scutum.
I am an engineer by trade, but only because archery does not pay as well.
I look forward to learning a lot here and passing on what I have learned.
Cheers

Ken! Welcome!
This is a great site, fine folks. The level of scholarship is high, and some of the folks here have astonishing amounts of knowledge. Above all, check out the reference section.
I've actually been around longer than my post count would indicate, a kind of prodigal son. I first joined at RAT v 1.?, IIRC, and my post rank got lost in the upgrades. Just "renelisted."
(Did word reach you about why Marie and I had to drop out of the league?)

Oh you do, you do.. You see, you live where they live: " over the hills and far away"!
(the second line is "teletubbies come to play")
Haven't you noticed a strange dome on a lawn somewhere, probably next door to the Led Zeppelin villa?
Wot's a barnoid?
