Greetings! As fellow reenactors I wanted to get your thoughts on this idea I have started. It is likely much easier in Europe to get interested people to show up and to participate, but over here it is a continual struggle. One thing that is missing is a central repository of information that can get everyone up to a similar level of knowledge quickly.
My goal was to write down in a useful format the information we need to put on events, who to contact, possible interests, the context for resources and links between them.
Though not entirely sure how to describe it, it is a visual map providing an inventory and context of the resources associated with Classical studies and activities in the Washington/VA/Md area, from schools to gov't support. The idea is to have both a comprehensive list of everyone in the area who touches classical themes and to show the context in which they work, relations to other groups, etc. The link below should take you to a webpage and pull up 'the Brain' which is the actual work.
http://webbrain.com/brainpage/brain/99DF...D626A67A25
How it works:
it looks initially like just a hierarchy of items. Click on any one and the entire diagram (aka 'plex') shifts to put that 'thought' front and center. You can follow that up and down. But you can also see how any particular thought relates to other thought by a 'jump' sideways. Use the search box in the lower left and put in VGLA and see what you get.
It is a work in progress, so will be refined continually: I add new elements every day, and it will be reorganized periodically.
Comments, suggestions, etc all welcome. Since it is a free software and read only they don't allow multiple editors so I have to make all changes.
Thanks
Richard Campbell

When ready the link needs to easy to find. Pinned at the top of the reenactment section of RAT perhaps and also posted prominently elsewhere like on LM and reneactor .net A catchy name for the resource would help also.

For those who have done this, take a look at
"Events/planning elements" and let me know if you have any suggestions based on your experiences.

You should add "Full Immersion" for events like Lafe, and "Public Display" for things like Castra Romana (Set up all our tents and ballisate and stuff but no combat).

A comment from the American Classical League prompted me to rearrange it so the it does not appear to be limited to the Washington area. The software is very flexible, so one item can have multiple "parents" as well as multiple "children".
The software itself is called "the brain" and there is a free client version at
Http://www.thebrain.com
And, now that it represents resources by region, I welcome suggestions for additions in your areas.

It is now expanded nationally and internationally. And, Bishop and Coulston are now in there.

"Safety Planning
Combat safety
Medical response
Threatening Weather Shelter
Law Enforcement and Terrorist threat
Fire Safety"
We usually have to provide risk assessments, down to fire and flood and evac points.also as far as pitching tents/tent ropes as a trip hazard and ways of restricting public access to "live weapons". Usually risk assessments in the form of tables and maps- which as Romans should be easily able to provide? :-) but i guess u knew that stuff

An update. I have been adding the faculty of every college and university that offers classics and tagging them with their specialties. You can search and find faculty across all universities who have research or teaching interests in " archaeometry" or "military history" or "epigraphy" for example.

I counted up and have progressed into an inventory of 200+ classics departments across the US, and will be adding others, plus a list of all the faculty, about 1000+, and all their interests. Lot of typing. the 50 or so terms that I have settled upon just kept cropping up, rather being my description.

Thanks. I am at a point where adding in related faculty departments, eg archaeology, art and history, make sense. Some, but not all, schools mention these adjunct resources as another reason for choosing them. Some schools bridge this by offering cross-registration: Haverford and Bryn Mawr, for example. Suggestions along these lines would be welcome. I found the one above indirectly.
