Dan thank you a lot for this image.
Kind regards
The soldiers seem to be holding a clutch of javelins instead of doru. Very interesting indeed. Any idea on time period?

Etrusco-Corinthian trilobate oinochoe
Gruppo dei Vasi Policromi (Group of the Polychrome Vases) 630-600 BC according to Dan Diffedale whose photo I presented.
The Argives were the first to abandon the javelines in favor of the tighter phalanx formation but other city states kept them until 600 B.C. it seems.
Chigi vase shows also hoplites with javelines.
Kind regards

The narrowes interpretation is the remnants of the "vatikan shield".
But as for other shields, non metallic parts have not survived therefore much things are open to educated guess and interpretation even speculation,
Kind regards
