New recruits
I quess this is the place to introduce so:

Hello I am Folkert van Wijk and a great fan off everything Celtic BC.
I have collected a lot of stuff durring the last couple of years, like helmets, swords, a dagger, a spear, and a some Juwelry.

A year ago I desided to do also reenactment work with it.
Because there isn't hardly any Celtic group here in the Netherlands I joined a Roman reanactment group. becoming a Auxilia of the most tribal and barbaric kind...

Joining in with those Romans my interrest widened and that made me signing on to this forum...

That wonderful phrase paints a very rustic, and violent, image. Welcome!

Quote:Welcome all newcomers to the Legions!

Make yourself at home with your fellow milites and tell us a little bit about yourself, such as...

- where are you from?
- how'd you become interested in Rome?
- why are you here?
- do you re-enact, are you a student, an academic professional, or..?

If you've posted once, you're considered a R.A.T. member, so climb aboard and enjoy the forum.

my name is jason, im in the army serving in afghanistan and thats about all of that im going to discuss about all that for opsec. im jaded with the modern army to say the least, were it that war was fought with sweat and steal, with some honor in it, but this...eh, i digress

im roman (italian), my family is from the napoli area, the legio II adiutrix pia fidelis was commissioned in 66-67 ad under nero in misenum modern day capo miseno, thats just down the way from napoli so maybe some ancestor served or maybe i did and im just a reconstituted roman? now for the weird part, before i new all this, my wife acquired me a ring unearthed from moesia and it turns out that the legIIapf was there in moesia at that time during the dacian wars?! interesting huh? i thought so

im here because this is the best resource and interaction site i was fortunate enough to find, i think my search is over and thank you all for having me and putting this together, most excellent my friends!

im interested in re enactments and such similar things, i just have pull to the glory that is rome and im here for the duration, thanks for having me

Welcome, Jason. You won't be disappointed in this place. (These people are quite brilliant.) Thanks for your service. I'm sure you're eager to get home to Fort Hood. (A bit too hot for me there too though, when I was stationed in Texas... still, it is better than your current alternative.)

For anyone interested in alternate impressions, I am as well (not all of the ancient), here's a few others:

(I do WWII also, no good pics at hand, though.) My latest project involves portraying the junior Tribune Marcus Valerius, attached to the staff of Legio VI (for this particular show, I was under the guise of a Praetorian, since we were lucky enough to have an Emperor amongst our ranks!):

I still have a lot of work to do on the uniform before it's as accurate as it should be. (Incidentally, my decision to portray a Tribune has come after many years of portraying “rankersâ€

Thanks, I didn't realize the pics would take up so much screen space! My first posting, my first boo-boo...

Welcome back, Jim/Valerius. Great impression, do tell us more about it in the Reenactment area, as Jeroen suggests.

Also a big welcome to Jason/Petrininus. Keep up the good work in Afghan. It's appreciated. I too served at Ft Hood -- you will find many current and ex-military members here.

Welcome Valerius. Out of curiosity... which American Civil War Cavalry regiment do you reenact? I host a site for my great-grandfather's regiment, the Fifth Iowa Cavalry.

Ironically, the 8th Illinois! They're a great bunch, but sadly I almost never make it to the CW reenactments due to my Roman focus, which reaches neurotic proportions at times. But I think all periods of reenacting add a little something, make you more well-rounded. In the case of CW, you've got the enemy... and lots of them! Most Romans will agree that there simply isn't the opportunity for "enemy" interaction most of the time. I was lucky enough to attend the Lafe, Ark. fort battle last year, and that was probably the one exception. I also dig the cavalry aspect of CW... one of my goals is to attend Gettysburg or Red River as a mounted trooper.

Here's my full kit. I portray a fresh fish from a well-to-do family, hence my rather flamboyant appearance:

Using the leather-working skills I acquired making my Roman kit, I made my own belt, holster, carbine sling, gauntlet cuffs, and heavily modified my shell jacket to look more like what I've seen in period tintypes. And that's an area where Roman surpasses all other time frames of reenacting: it teaches you to make stuff. Invaluable skills.

Best wishes, and The Union Forever,
M VALERIVS
