Embarassing Days From the Past... one of ours.... YOURS???
#1
Because we aren't afraid of our past... what about yours?

These photos surfaced a few days ago... before we knew better...

One of our first caliga.... pushing 15 years ago.. couldn't find hobnails or anything that would suffice.. needed traction for an event.... it was easy (too easy!) Surprisingly they stood up very well.. steel acorn nuts and steel machine screws... and look we actually used real shoe soles.. oxhide too... pressed to 1/4 inch... tough!

Yeah, that's not THAT bad...what's the expression about necessity being the mother of all inventions?

How did it feel to stand on your nuts?

Thankfully nowdays excellent accurate hobnails are available from several sources. All you need to do is check with the vendors in the RAT marketplace. I used WW1 US Army hobnails for a pair of mine last year.
Not cheap as I was selling them for $1.00 each on an auction site!
I don't have anymore but now it;'s not a problem as the new hobnails on the market are much cheaper!

Well, it's not so bad: you have used leather for the calligae and not plastic!!!!!!! Big Grin

Yes, the beginings are always dificult. All of us have used a trick or another. The good thing it's to replace the incorrections. And, yes, today it's a lot easier than only 5 years ago!!!!!

I scoured every old shoe repair shop in San Diego County seeking hobnails... A couple years later, Dean Cunningham of Oregon USA found a shoe shop in his town that actually had some small boxes of hobnails! Sent some to me..( I still have those Dean!) . We still have one unfinished caliga in the Bin O'Caliga that has holes drilled through the soles, awaiting screws and nuts

I rank the acorn nut hobnails as our number one faux...

Whoa, thanks for that! I happen to live in Dean's town, and will ask him where to find the shop when I see him at Egil's this weekend. Been wondering where to find hobnails for cheap, since I know mine will wear out eventually.

As for me, I've been trying to avoid anything too painfully modern but just can't help itright now. I cut the toes and heels out of a pair of worn out rag wool socks and calling them udones for the event next Friday. They'd be fine except that the tops are ribbed like most modern socks are.

Not to mention my unmodified Deepeeka scutum, with one acorn nut showing because I lost one of those brass caps they send to cover them up. The buckles of my carry straps are modern too, but not blatanly so. But hey, I only had 3 weeks notice to put my marching kit together where I had none at all Smile I'll improve it later.

Not sure if Dean has anymore... Cry ...he walked into asmall old local she repair shop and asked.. the owner found some old dust encased boxes in a deep dark recess of a shelf... I believe the date on the boxes he sent me was about 1955...

Here is a cheap alternative that will look much better than your sock project.

Well, I was lucky enough to start RR when most of the blunders had already been made...although I did find this old pic of me when I had one member in my legion, and my battle tunic was still white! (didn't have any other gear except what u see too).
