Hadrian\'s Wall, the place to be.
#1
The Thirteenth Pilgrimage of Hadrian’s Wall starts this Saturday 8th August.
http://www.newcastle-antiquaries.org.uk ... pageId=420

On the morning the pilgrimage will be visiting Maryport, and the Senhouse Museum. The museum is celebrating the acquisition of the fort and civil settlement at Maryport by holding a Roman cavalry event. Comitatus will have 5 horses out on parade to meet the pilgrimage and help celebrate the site.

The XXIst International Limes (Roman Frontiers) Congress 2009 at Newcastle upon Tyne will take place at Newcastle University from Monday, August 17th to Sunday, 23rd August, 2009. http://www.newcastle-antiquaries.org.uk ... pageId=502

And Comitatus cavalry will be visiting Arbeia in South Shields on the Saturday 15th before moving on to Segedunum, Wallsend, on the 16th, the Sunday.

Details can be viewed at http://www.comitatus.net/events.html

This was my first visit to Maryport, hardly a large place, on the west coast of England south of Hadrian's Wall. But it's certainly a special place, the fort enjoying sweeping views over the Solway estuary. Seeing Roman cavalry riding in the fort for the first time 1,600 years was very evocative. The museum was ecstatic to have 1,000 visitors through their doors to see the displays.

Yes, images can be very evocative, even beguiling. They bring the past to life and are accessible to all. Yet we give the written word more credence.

I suspect the best photos of the event have yet to be posted. But some can be already viewed at

Cheers

The watchtower looks very interesting, and the shots of the cavalry on the crest just begs for a photoshop job.....

We could see the Pictish camp fires across the water,I think we need more than their 'watchtower' !

The first photos from Arebeia and Segedunum can be viewed at http://www.comitatus.net/galleryarbeia9.html

We tried to visualise a court complete with an Imperial Governor, based on the Rossano Gospels.

I knew that Roman horses were small, but that's ridiculous. [attachment=0:1n4jto2a]<!-- ia0 MiniCavalry.JPG<!-- ia0 [/attachment:1n4jto2a]

The entire cavalry family travel in the box.

Baby, dog, horses, Connolly style saddles, German pad saddles, the more modern Carlisle saddle, Steppe saddle, horse armour, and drinks for the weekend. Everything. It makes packing up so much easier. Smile

Wow, where did you get this from? Is it a Feldon helm?

That looks like Fronto sporting it on the second page?
