Julius Caesar formed a number of new Legions while in Gaul. The first of these was the Fifth Gallica (later Alaudae) in transalpine Gaul in 52 BCE. It must have been an interesting
problem to equip these new units without the official approval and support of the Roman Senate. I am guessing that some equipment manufacture was available in the established
province of transalpine Gaul (now part of north Italy) but what about the rest of Gaul? Did Caesar source new equipment in newly acquired lands? Is this how some of the early Gallic style helmets began being used in the Legions? Did scuta designs start to change slightly also?
