Female reenactors as soldiers?

Quote:Ammianus, you never told me if I got them all right or not?
Yes - well done Byron! All correct Big Grin

Quote:I am certainly not a male chauvanist, but there are some things tha tjust wouldn't work.
For instance, we are in some instances required to wear unarmoured dress....
I must say that I disagree. A baggy tunich does wonders. It doesn't reveal the female form or look feminine. And when you say unarmoured, I think that a subarmalis could be counted in the term, in which that definately would look fine.

On the special features of LOTR many of the Rohirrim were ladies and weren't that far off from Miss Amy. They ran out of men that could ride horses, I am sure that may have happened once or twice historically in 10,000 years of civilization. 8)

FAT re-enactors should be banned from displays, wether male or female, it was NOT done !(unless in the role of fat patrician villa owner or tax collector or obese senator eating fat meat dripping fat all over themselves)

Midgets (or to use the correct name, little people) should NOT be allowed to join in the ranks, except when in a circus or variety role.

Ah yes, and did i mention all Greek re-enactors should be homosexual and engage in homosexual, bisexual and pederastic acts?

Why? That would only make it historically correct from the jadded view point of modern interpretation.

PEOPLE!! we live in the year 2009 !!!

we have women's rights these days, and human rights.
Those who want to do the hobby, are allowed to do the hobby.
whatever creed, colour, sexe, sexual orientation and what have you.

to be historically correct is to have historically feasible and scientifically researched armour and equipment.

to be historically correct means also you should not re-enact, since the Romans did not either re-enact.
(unless you want to portray some big fights in the Arena, or even on lake Nemi)

The Romans are and have been dead for centuries.
Why then bother?

Its a hobby! and it should be entertaining and educational to the public and yourself, wether you are from Mars or Venus, or inbetween...

I have played both a traditional womans role and that of a soldier. I enjoy both for different reasons. I can understand the arguments brought up by people who feel soldiers should only be men, but as stated by others it is not too hard to disguise womanly bits!
I have hair which is well past shoulder level. All I do is put it in a bun and hide it with my hat. Between and after the shows I change into my dress if it is possible. If I stay in male kit I keep my hat on. This sometime makes me quite hot!
Members of the public do sometimes joke about cross dressing soldiers but most just ask me questions about the kit and the vast majority seem to understand.

But really, I will say you looks good in the kit, and I am impressed by anyone who has the guts to get on a horse in kit!

all the best to all you ladies who are doing this!
