Earliest strap-ends
#1
Hey guys,

I was wondering what the earliest descriptions/depictions of strap-ends are.. In other words, from when dates the fist evidence for the use of a strap-end on a belt? I tried the search function earlier, but with no satisfying results.. Could be me though.. Tongue

Anyway, I need some info about this because I am writing a essay for school, and I have to give some (historical) background information about some stuff.. Wink Including some nice pictures etc.. You know the drill.. Tongue Wink

Thanks!

Greetz,

Manuel

P.S. Dunno if this really should be under roman military history, but couldn't find a better place at the moment.. Wink Mods go ahead.. Wink

Earliest I can think of would be the early imperial belt which has the end split into four and one end passes through the buckle. These have strap end terminals.

There's a second century (Antonine period) example from Hadrian's Wall.. (See Bishop & Coulston Figure 88)

So the multiple strap ends precede the single strap end? (For example Migration Period & Viking belts)

What regions are you interested in?

Many belts in Achaemenid Persian art (5th or 4th century BCE) appear to have a bead at the end of the belt, since you can see a narrow projection from the tip of the belt. This photo is a good example. They definitely liked metal fittings on weapon belts, as you can see here. But that's pretty far in time and space from Rome Smile

I have not checked this forum frequently since 2013, but I hope that these old posts have some value. I now have a blog on books, swords, and the curious things humans do with them.

Hey guys,

Here's a picture of the strap end I need to give some historical info about.. I think it's (a replica of) an early medieval strap end, probably from the east of Europe?

I have to provide a historical background for this item, including some info about the first use of strap ends..

Thanks again! Smile
