Care of sheepskin

I am planning to reconstruct the carrying bag and moneypouch found in the Cave of Letters at En Gedi and have gotten my hands on some decent sheepskin and kidskin leathers for the purpose. However, the seller was unable to tell me how these have to be treated to ensure longevity. Do you oil or grease them like other leathers? How safe is it to expose them to water (they look pretty absorbent)?<br>
