Last weekend at Wervik, Belgium. Hamata is loaner gear (hopefully next year I'll have my own).

Auxiliary soldier third-fourth quarter 1st century AD.

Yeah I had to use Loaner Caligae and Loaner Sword because I forgot mine. The Hamata though is Rusty's old one, so its actually decent, 6mm ID and whatnot.

i just finished my new hand sewn tunic

i thought about dying it, but i looked up in my books and came to the conclusion that white was a perfectly approptiate color

Looks good! What fabric is that, linen or wool?
Reply
Its made of linen

Took me about one and a half day to get it done

i used this pattern to make it, alltough its late roman i assume a pattern like this would have been around for some time, and the long sleeves are plausible, here in austria winters can be unpleasant, and summers sometimes too, and auxiliarys stationed on the noric/germanic limes would have had the need for a litte bit warmer clothing Wink

next thing on the to do list is the subarmalis

i hope to be soon able to post some actual photos of my impression

Yes, long sleeves are certainly possible, and that tunic could be a good model, as long as you don't use the decorations on it.

I look forward to seeing your impression!

Nice sewing job there. What period are you depicting though? If you are doing early third century or later then you are probably on safe(ish) grounds but any earlier would be a bit shaky in my opinion. Also, if you are concerned about the cold, multiple layers of wool are your best solution (and the authentic Roman one too).

The target area would be a batavian auxiliary around the very late first and the early second century

This tunic is much too late for that. Narrow long sleeves are really a later fasion. Sure, winters can be cold and sleeves may be possible, but the narrow ones really seem to have arrived later. Wink

Hi Thomas,

How did you decide on the shield design for the VIIII Batavians, Is it just a best guess or did you find a clue somewhere?

Thanks
Adam

i came up with it myself, since i found no source for the paintjob of the original shields this cohort used
