And for all you guys who love to make fun of the SCA, here's some more ammunition. I am SO sad this picture cuts off right at the guy's head, because his "weapon" is a foam cut-out, yellow duct-taped, fully SCA-legal AQUILA! At least you have to give him style points.

I was under the impression that by the late 11th century most of the Varangian Guard would have been composed of English thegns who had been forced out of England by the Norman conquest and the Harrying of the North, rather than Scandanavians as it had been before. :twisted:

Indeed the Guard was more Saxon at this time, according to available sources.
