Rivets and Methods Used To Cut Steel
#1
Ave!

I have tried searching for a couple things that I'm interested in, but I can't seem to find any answers.

I do forging and I love making ancient Roman equipment. My challenges are to do it the most authentic way possible. And as you know, our modern techniques and a very limited source of information in this field of how the ancient Romans did things, get in the way of that.

It is a challenge I hope to overcome.

Regarding Roman armour, particularly the lorica segmentata variety, we notice there's two things involved in their creation.

First, the sheet metal has to be cut. How did the Romans cut sheet metal exactly?

Second, we know the Romans loved the use of rivets from construction to armour smithing, and lorica segmentata was all riveted together.

How did the Romans rivet things? What was the methods they used?

What was the "Roman" way?

I know there are some really good ancient Roman historians on this forum, and any information regarding these fundamentals will be of great importance to me.
