Hello!

I'm Jim. I've always been interested in the Ancient Romans but never got beyond the Hollywood form of research. For example, the movie Gladiator is the foundation of my knowledge of Ancient Rome.

Right now I'm studying Ancient Greece, from around 550 BC until Alexander's death. Beyond these years probably won't serve me, plus study time is limited. My interst in the Greek world began after I read Hanson's book, Carnage and Culture. His description of the battles of Salamis and Guagamela were incredible!

I suppose I'm ethnocentric... But I'll keep my politics outside this board. My knowledge is limited and I probably won't be able to add anything here anyway, except in the off-topic forum. Studying the Ancient Greeks and eventually the Ancient Romans will help me understand my own culture (American) better.

The only thing about history that bothers me is that I can't live a few extra centuries and find out how the United States turns out.
"Saladin, we have returned. My presence here consecrates the victory of the Cross over the Crescent." - Henri Gourand, French General, July 1920
