Romans and chariots
#1
Had a "discussion" with a friend the other day. He inquired of me whether the Romans used chariots. I said that they might have had mercenary charioteers, but likely didn't have their own.

So I ask you: did the Romans use chariots, either mecrs or their own?

No the Romans didn't use chariots. Only for the races but that's the sport section.
In Caesar's time the Brittons used chariots but mainly as a transport base for the warriors on the battlefield.

Thanks!

Actually, the scene with the chariots from Ben Hur was the reason my friend asked me the question.

A link for chariot racing because the chariot racing in Ben Hur isn't very accurate.

Vegetius talks about specially outfitted Chariots for attacking Elephants. Probably more imaginary than real, but you never know...

(I haven't looked at the original Latin, mind)

The De Rebus Bellicis also recommends scythed chariots but these types definately never made it off the drawing board
