Early augustean Pugio
#1
Hi all guys. I have a question for you. What pugio, among the different models offered, can i use for an Early augustean period reconstruction? What do you think?

Thanks

I think you must go for a iron side gutters, like the Titelberg or Dangesteten exemplars. Other types probably are a little later...

See that discussion:

A question... If you are making an early augustean impression, why are searching a Fulham gladius? It's for another impression or am i wrong?

Thanks for the pugio info!

Concerning the gladius, you are right, it is the same impression, i have twisted the search to a more accurate hispaniensis, but...if i remember correctly, the last known hispaniensis dates from 20 BC (France), just the aproximate period i am reconstructing (maybe a little later), so...it is possible that shorter and more modern blades were replacing the longer hispaniensis at that time? (Sorry that this is a little off-topic...)

In my opinion you have to go for a Mainz Type. I have seen the new deepeka model and it's very good. Or if you want a better one, see:

I think Fulham and another repousse exemplars are Tiberian or Cludian Period.

Yeah, maybe you are right. I like the one from Binsfeld, but he did not respond to e-mails (apparently he takes his time to answer). I also have always liked the "Allectus" from Albion...Mainz-type gladius is probably my preferred sword of any time, both beautiful and vicious-looking.

Keep in touch

Confusedhock: look at those prices for the cast cingulum parts... 4euro for an undercorated cingulum stud, 35euro for a fairly simple buckle, 15euro for a cast beltplate with concentric rings... I wonder if he sells those things...

Mainz or Fulham?: Bear in mind there's a growing opinion there's actually no distinction between the two, and the Fulham is simply a Mainz type that had more grinding over a long period. If in doubt, stick with a Mainz or Hispaniensis, though.

Israel,

I own the Albion Allectus, and I really like it. A third option for a very nice gladius is to order one from Mark Morrow -- he charges ~$12 per 2.5cm of blade length, so a 50cm Mainz Blade would cost you about $250, or ~195 euros. You could either hilt it yourself (Mark may do the hilts, but I have not had him do one for me) or get a custom hilt from Matt Lukes or someone else. (See Matt's Section in the Marketplace Forum for examples of his hilts and scabbards).

Mark Morrow: http://www.swordsmith.net/roman.asp?gal ... d=65#Items

I have two gladii on order from him, a pompeii and a fulham.

Matt Lukes is a great option for a custom hilt and scabbard:

Matt does not have a website but is very prompt at answering emails.

For about the price of an Albion Allectus, you could get a custom blade, hilt and scabbard from these fellows. Only downside is that you will probably wait about a year for them -- both receive a large volume of work and are swamped with orders. I think they are worth the wait.
