Tarbicus,

I saw that statue in the BM the other day! It reminds me of the naval flat caps of the 19th century....anyway, time to get some more steak and kidney pie before I have to head back to the states...

Cheers,
Adam C.

Re: 1st Century Hats - ursinius - 06-01-2006

Me too, Iurienus already contacted us once for scutum info...

Jurjen, why not try the Gemina experience? :-) ) You're already at our former base

Graham, were did they find this pompomhat in egypt? Qasr ibrim, Mons Claudianus or Berenice perhaps? published already some where?

I would love to shock our centurion with a reconstruction of it...

Ursinius/Sebastiaan

Although listed as a Roman soldier wearing a helmet, this mosaic shows what seems to be a hat similar to the fisherman's earlier in the thread.

Imperial Palace, Istanbul, Turkey

Hi Jim

That picture might also help out with the soldiers bag on another thread!

Sebastiaan I know one hat was found at Mons Claudianus but I do not know which part of Egypt the hat with the pom pom, now in Florence, came from I would have to check.

Graham.

Some Hermish Petasos.

Even the The Thracians had them

Is this a late one? Do you have other examples from the later times?

To me that is very similar to the Hellenistic Topi or Topee casque...

Re: 1st Century Hats - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 07-16-2006

A lot of the pictures seems to be Hermes representations, included the Istambul ones.

Including the last one I posted of what seems to be a traveller carrying a duffle bag over his shoulder?

Ooops. Probably not.
