Tirones - Paullus Scipio - 10-14-2008

A special welcome to fellow Aussies, Dave, Polynikes and Decanus. Smile D
I was once Infantry too, but from a generation long ago!
My interests run to all things Graeco-Roman, but my special favourite, as you might gather from the name, is also the period of Rome's expansion beyond Italy - from the first Punic War to Trajan. 8)

BTW guys, don't forget to add your real name.....Forum rule!!

Ave! - Lucius Aurelius Lurco - 10-16-2008

Hello all, just a quick hello. I'm from the US and considering doing reenacting. Considering I'm a 44 year old, typically overweight, diabetic with NO gear whatsoever (yet) and the nearest unit that I know of (Cohors Tres Italica C.R.) is several hundred miles distant from me, I have some hurdles to overcome. I've been a reenactor before (American Fur trade era and WW2 US) so I know the drill, so to speak. Actually, I'm getting a huge kick out of the fact that the same kind of "authenticity" debates rage right through just about every kind of reenacting.
Anyway, off to go read some more!
<Edit> Hmm, name not showing up in signature....

Re: New recruits - Lucius Aurelius Lurco - 10-16-2008

We Like her too. She is named after a real ship mentioned in the SHARK PAPERS one Schooner Ferret commanded by LT Fitton, strangely enough our skipper is also a LT in the reenactment circles and his last name is Fitton, ummmm, he is claiming the other as a relative even if he is not, (we are checking)

Re: New recruits - Virtus Probi Invicti - 10-22-2008

Bryan, turns out the US Navy is still mad about that war and there is a Harpoon missile with your schooner's name on it...watch out!!!
:o
JK!!!
BTW, you guys can have Detroit now, if you want it.

Welcome, and hope you have fun!

With others like you around how can one not have fun!

That is why I now do my hobby's its not foranyone else, its because I
want to have fun and learn a little. WIth people like you I know i will
laugh and learn as I go, Now to find a helm since the one upstairs in my
attic is a CLASSIC TROOPER.....(insert expletive here) that was bought
many moons ago, and is apparently decorative but not much else....

Big Grin

It is strange how the US doesn't like to talk much about that war....
But at least there are some Great reenactors from the states and
hay we let them win on Saturday, Sunday we kick their behinds...
Its all in good fun, and I hope that translates here as well, I'm sure
it will!

BTW Thanks for messing up Detroit and then offering it to us...

(No Offense meant to any residents of that fine city)

Re: New recruits - Virtus Probi Invicti - 10-23-2008

Glad that you took my remarks in good fun, as they were intended!
I'm afraid that conversation here in the US tends to stay away from controversial, yet critical, topics such as war and politics...except in many working class bars. Many people feel that not agreeing with someone is insulting, which is ridiculous to me.
I'm sure that most residents of the Detroit area would agree that the place is in serious and desperate trouble...a friend of mine is trying to get rid of a house there after being laid off from the auto industry and moving to Minneapolis for work. He's in big trouble...I lived there for a brief time, didn't leave because of the area but wasn't especially drawn to stay there, either. I did enjoy Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, Hamtramck, and Greektown a lot.
Don't have much experience with Canada other than visiting Windsor in the old days and enjoying Montreal very much...fantastic city. Used to make three city in one day business trips there, so didn't see much of the places I was visiting. I do need to take the family to Quebec City, which, I am told, is a wonderful place.
The best to you, neighbor!
Big Grin
