I like the look of your buildings, you will find many admirers of your work
here, they are a friendly lot, as long as you do not touch their fish sauce.
We do welcome you and hope you find a home here.

Re: New recruits - OldMeridius - 10-31-2008

Hello All!

I have been watching Rome (HBO Series) on DVD, as well as Gladiator for preparation for Roman Armor costuming. So, I have been google-ing, and researching, and I put together a suit in 10 days. As I have been a member of costuming sites before, and I own a forum called Clone-Empire, I have been bitten by the armor bug... yet again.

As I said, 10 days is not enough time to put together a real suit, and I am still a W.I.P. - but, the only way you learn is to get "into it" and learn from peers. Hence, I wanted to join this place. Please do not throw me under the bus. Since I am just a NewB at this (yet again).

I will post pics soon. But I wanted to be proper and say hey.

Lastly, I am not a student currently, but I studied Military History while in Military School AND while in college, I studied da Classics (reference the movie, Spartacus, when Antonius is being questioned by Marcus Licinius Crassus on what he did). Now, that scene is Classic!

Well, Troop On!

John, Old Meridius

Re: New recruits - The_Mariner - 10-31-2008

While Film can be a good starting point there is usually something wrong
with the way they portray things, just take that all with a grain of salt as
it were and check with the scholars here before believing what may or
may not really be true.

Really Welcome and hope you have fun, I'm sure someone like Soul Of
The Warrior (SOTW) could make your dream of a 10 day outfit a reality if
you wanted to buy everything but if you want to make some of your gear
it will take more and cost more in LIFE denari. There are many skilled
artizans here and helpful merchants that would be happy to help you
create a Roman in 10 days or less.

Check out the products in the sections and see what every one as a
whole thinks of an item before you get it, if you have references to this
item from books etc, write them down for yourself for later so if ever
questions you can explane where your references are and why you chose
to portrey yourself this way, you will get great help from your local group
if you have found one near you, if not see if you can send time with a
group at events to gain knowledge and have a group of friends that can
help you with your representation or give you ideas of what time period
to chose as there is a large range of time periods to chose from.

Re: New recruits - OldMeridius - 10-31-2008

Thanks for the message! I do like doing things myself, but I also like to spare myself some trouble... Example, I could never make my own shoes/sandles. But in turn, I could possibly sculpt armor... but if I formed it in styrene, it would probably be for naught.

However, I was hostimg a Halloween Party last Saturday and I was able to complete this "costume-quality" suit in ten days (how do I embed pics???). Well, follow the links to see my attempt.

http://www.clone-empire.com/spqr/office.jpg

http://www.clone-empire.com/spqr/serving.jpg

It is not Legion-worthy, but it has perked my interest.

That said, it seems anything made from faux finishing is a no-no, at least on some of the Roman Forums I have seen thus far. Some detail... The shoulder segments are handicapped signs with metalizing paint. The chest armor was metalized styrene armor.

Perhaps I need to make a sub-group of background fodder troops in high-quality styrene armor. HAHAHA!!!

So really, what is funny and ironic is that I was asked many times if it is "real" armor at the party.

And I said "no, I just threw it together" over the last week or so. The helmet is a Made in India 18 gage steel helmet. The plume is artificial horsehair, but I probably need to start digging deeper on the DIY stuff. The Tunic was from Museum Replicas. As I mentioned, it was a speedy suit assembly.

I was going for a Maximus Decimus Meridius-look. I needed a wolf skin and a more dingy color palette, and a Greco-Roman helmet versus the Maize-styled helmet.

But, I have found this forum and I look forward to understanding more. I try when I am in the mood... note the screen-accurate sand trooper on the mannequin behind me!

Oh well, it is my first taste.

I look forward to the bus wheels! But go slowly. All in good fun!

Troop On!

John

Re: New recruits - The_Mariner - 10-31-2008

If you are into just LOOK-ing like you belong many of the merchants also
carry armour and such not for reenacting but for theatrical work and
pageants and such these would tend to be much less expensive and still have
a semi-"Authentic" feel to them if you just wanted that. If you want to
re-enact then the group you join will want you to portray accurately what
they are trying to represent, there are no buses here to throw you under,
(Say is that a chariot?) so as long as you are upfront with what you wish to
portray or do there will not be any of that, we are all generally friendly and
do not snap unless someone takes the last little bit of Garam (its a
fish sauce).

Re: New recruits - Nihonius Legio - 10-31-2008

Any recipes for said fish sauce? Is it good?

Why yes....as a matter of fact.....

Sorry I should not have posted here, see FOOD Section for re-post)

Really, the modern version is not bad, and SOOOOO much easier!

Re: New recruits - OldMeridius - 10-31-2008

I like the warm welcome here. Thanks a lot. I am a member of the 501st, a "Preferred" Star Wars Legion (and it has a Forum) as well as being the Founder of an Un-Official Star Wars Clone Trooper and Storm Trooper/Sand Trooper Forum.

http://www.clone-empire.com/forums

So, I respect what it takes to run a clean forum AND we have recently been fighting spammers, and more importantly, to keep people focused on goals, while taking into consideration an individual's natural aptitude, ability to learn new skills, motivation, ability to plan, and maintaining a relatively normal life-Faith-family-work-hobby balance... and not become obsessed.

But there is a fine line between committed and obsessed.

I have caught myself doing that - hence, founding of a 800+ Forum of my own - but I am trying to diversify.

Ironically, the first "Ancient" prop I acquired was a 1st unit, 1st generation casting of a screen-seen Spartan helmet from the film 300.

Then I got a rubber dory spear tip and end.

As for my Roman, it is probably fit for a Passion Play, but I would like to explore going to the next level.

I wish I could post pics. I use the image tags, but they do not show my images. So, please bear with me.

I have some pics I want to share of my scratch-made sheath for my wooden Gladius. I metalized the blade and stained the hilt knobs and I painted the hilt a semi-gloss white for an ivory/bone appearance. It came out pretty cool. I will post them up very soon.

Thanks guys!!!

John

Re: New recruits - Nihonius Legio - 10-31-2008

Laudes to you for the recipe! I'm going to try that out ASAP! The Roman version sounds interesting...a little gross. I'd try it if someone else made the stuff, but I'd be afraid of botulism even with the salt. Why grape juice when there isnt anything like that in the original?

Re: New recruits - The_Mariner - 11-01-2008

If you ever tried anchovy paste it is WAY TOO salty and has a kick, the
boiled down juice (Not grape punch, that is not good) makes a thicker
syrupy like paste that when mixed with the Anchovy Paste cuts each
other down quite nicely, you can vary the other spices but do it slowly
and try a little at a time outside your main batch to see if you like it.
Curry, Celery spice, Cinnamon, Dried orange peal all can be made to
work but don't drop it all in , and don't be afraid to experiment a little.
Make it fun, Thanks for the LAUDES They are my first! (Just click the
button under my picture on the left side of the screen, Yes the + sign!)
