Re: New recruits - M. Demetrius - 08-19-2010

Quote:This has required painstaking research. Since I know many of you re-enact and/or otherwise have an obsession with all things ancient Rome and the Roman army, I thought this would be a good place to be.
If there are any legions of reenactors near you, you might persuade them to let you come on a hike or two with them, wearing the gear, so you'd have sort of a first hand "feel" of the way things were. Just a thought. And the conversations around the rest stops could help you, too.

Re: New recruits - Lanista - 08-20-2010

That's a brilliant idea: I worked with Graham Ashford of Ludus Gladiatorius when I was researching "Gladiatrix" to get a feel for wearing and carrying the gear (I got drafted into the Leg II Aug too), but yeah - again, that's brilliant research cos you know what the stuff feels like when its on!

Cheers

Re: New recruits - bellatrix - 08-20-2010

Lanista & M. Demetrius,

Thank you for the suggestions! There is a Roman reenactment group here, but they aren't Roman army reenactors...they reenact daily Roman life at Renaissance festivals and such. However, a couple of them do wear armor, so I can at least meet with them and talk to them and see how I can participate. I think I do need to feel how it was to wear the uniform...I don't think it could have been very comfortable! In fact, I remember reading something about how the soldiers would get some kind of callous from their helmets. Has anyone heard anything about that?

Russ, your suggestion that research should be like a bad case of farting is hilarious and is a great way to explain how research should appear in a book - not in your face so much as used to create a good clear picture for the reader. I am struggling with exactly what you describe. I want the reader to know all kinds of interesting things about the ancient Romans. When I went back and read the first few pages, I realized I was listing facts rather than weaving the facts into the story in such a way that it creates a good picture in the mind's eye.

This is such a great forum! Have a great weekend, everyone.

I finally found some active reenactment groups today! All I had found here in Colorado thus far were more Renaissance fair-based. I will contact these groups and see what I can get into. More to come!

Re: New recruits - Tiberio-Tertio - 09-01-2010

Well here I go, I am from Germany, have been here before on this forum under the nick "Tiberio" but somehow lost my access to that account.
Started reenactment in 1990 as a romanised Germanic, trying to show the way ordinary people lived during the 1st century AD. Due to having been a few years "beyond the borders of the Earth plate" I am in the process of polishing up my old gear, and seeing who is still around.
Due to being a goldsmith I am of course very much into making replicas, although not on a large scale basis as some.
My main interest is the civilian part of Roman life during the first century. Anyone else active in the vicinity of Frankfurt/Main?
Looking forward to pleasant conversations.

Welcome back Tib.

Re: New recruits - Metella - 09-18-2010

Oh no, introductions, I'm terrible at these haha.
I'm Samantha, from the Northern (colder) half of the UK. I've had an interest in Roman history since I was about six, when I witnessed a re-enactment at Chedworth Roman villa on my first visit there. Since then, I've joined and left the Young Archaeologist's Club, and started on the road towards my intended career as a Battlefield Archaeologist with a specialisation in Roman Warfare. I've not managed to get into re-enacting yet, but it's on my 'to do' list once university starts, classes settle and I've an idea how flexible my budget is.

Re: New recruits - Perpetua - 10-05-2010

Hi! I've just stumbled upon this fascinating universe (I never imagined OCD could be so much fun!!!). This looks like a nicely-run forum, so I owe you an introduction:
- where are you from? US, Midwest (Yawn!)
- how'd you become interested in Rome? Since age 8, history class.
- why are you here? Reading Caesar, getting a crash course in things military.
- do you re-enact (goodness no!), are you a student (not anymore, happily retired from coursework), an academic professional, or.. (biomedical research-I could send you a couple of articles if you need something for insomnia). ?

Thanks for letting me to sign up. I promise not to do anything that gets me expelled.
Best regards,

Nic

Welcome aboard! Feel free to ask questions, but be prepared to be directed to the search function...

Re: New recruits - SCIPIO_HADRIANVS - 10-13-2010

Hi all,

Im a high school student from Canada. I am really interested in Roman History especially to do with the Roman military and Architecture. I am interested in becoming a reenactor one day when I am out of school. I have always been interested in Histroy and I recently went extreme with Roman history when I read a book called "In the Name of Rome."

Glad to be a part of the Legions

Re: New recruits - Taff Simon - 11-16-2010

Hello,

Taff Simon here.I am a Welsh archaeologist living in Munich and have dug extensively at Arbeia and Hadrian's Wall and more recently here in Raetia/Bavaria.
When not digging I work as a tour guide, specialising in archaeology, Medieval history and 3rd Reich/WW2 tours. I am on here because I want to expand my knowledge of the Roman military and to get more "in the zone"as it were, particularly in regard to the Raetian Limes.

I look forward to spending some quality time on here.

Regards,

Taff Simon, Munich

Re: New recruits - jvrjenivs - 11-16-2010

Welcome on RAT, Taff. I'm sure you'll have much quality time here. As you're now living in the Munich area, you might find the 'Legio XIII experimental march' of Augsburg university during last summer interesting. See [url:1m81hvf9]http://www.ckoepfer.de/[/url] Also some nice museums over there. Big Grin

Re: New recruits - Cleaver - 11-29-2010

Goodday to you all,

My first post here...

Let´s just "fall into the house with the door" as we say here in the Netherlands Big Grin
- where are you from? Nijmegen, the Netherlands, but originally more from the Eindhoven area
- how'd you become interested in Rome? I was born with it, just like my passion for (military) history
- why are you here? To find some answers and perhaps give a few in the meantime
- do you re-enact, are you a student, an academic professional, or..? I have a degree in history but alas am not employed in it. My interests come from both the hobbyist´s and the academical point of view.

I´ve always loved history and pacticularly military history of just about all eras. Particular interests in (military) history are: WWI, WWII (specialised in aviation and U-boat warfare), military architecture, Egypt and of course Rome. As a period I enjoy the ancient times the most, although from a purely military perspective the World Wars are closest to me.

From the Roman era I am mostly interested in Republican Rome, especially the Punic Wars. Visiting Roman sites and admiring their architecture and life cycle really brings a lot of joy to me. In the past 15 months I´ve visited Tunisia, Hadrian´s Wall and Western Turkey which only left me thirsting for more! Big Grin

I have history in my head at all times. Check out my signature for the attitude that pervades my life. 8)

Besides history I am very much into computer, board and table-top games. While my computer games tend to lie in the historical realm mostly (WWII FPS games, Total War series, U-Boat/flight Sims), my table-top games are oriented mostly at fantasy games of the Games Workshop brand (Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Man o´ War etc.). Unfortunately work and everyday distractions bar me from pursuing my hobbies the way I would really like to: I spend more time reading about and buying games and miniatures than actually painting and playing them. The same reason will cause me to drop out here from time to time until I suddenly reappear when you least expect it. Sometimes I publish (historical) articles on a Dutch website aimed at school pupils and the interested layman, although these are not of academic level of course.

Kind regards,

Cleaver

Hi Reinoud,
Good to see you here!

I was wondering how long it would take for you to recognise me! Big Grin roll:
